Currently, the 10 CONMEBOL members initially compete in two groups of 5 teams, each playing against each other. The best three teams qualify for the 2nd round in which everyone plays against everyone again. In contrast to this, the two best teams in the first group phase met immediately in the final in 2009, while the second and third placed teams played out places 3 to 6 in a further group phase. Until 2005, only the two best teams in each group qualified for the 2nd group phase, although in 1999 the 2nd round was played in the knockout system.
Since 2007, when the field of participants in the World Cup was increased to 24, the four best teams have qualified for the U-17 World Cup. Previously it was the three best teams or the two best if the World Cup host was a South American team and thus automatically qualified.
