The 1997 U-17 South American Football Championship took place in Paraguay from February 28, 1997 to March 16, 1997 .
The matches to determine the tournament winner were held in the cities of Encarnación , Pedro Juan Caballero and Asunción . The game was played in two groups of five teams each, followed by a final phase with four teams, also in group mode. The national teams of Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Chile , Ecuador , Colombia , Paraguay , Peru , Uruguay and Venezuela took part in the tournament. From the event, the U-17 of Brazil emerged as the winner. Places two to four went to the national teams from Argentina, Chile and Paraguay.
The title of top scorer was shared with four goals each by Brazilians Giovani and Chileans Milovan Mirosevic and Juan Viveros .
Brazil, Argentina and Chile as the three best-placed teams after the tournament qualified for the U-17 World Cup in 1997 in Egypt .
