The 2003 U-17 South American Football Championship took place in Bolivia in May 2003 .
The matches to determine the tournament winner were held in Santa Cruz de la Sierra . The games had been moved there after the event, which was actually scheduled for February 28, 2003 to March 16, 2003 in Maracay , Venezuela, had to be canceled due to social unrest in Venezuela . The game was played in two groups of five teams each, followed by a final phase with four teams, which was also held in group mode and made up of the two group winners. The national teams of Argentina , Bolivia , Brazil , Chile , Ecuador , Colombia , Paraguay , Peru , Uruguay and Venezuela took part in the tournament. The U-17 of Argentina emerged from the event as the winner. Places two to four went to the national teams from Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay. Argentina's Hernán Gastón Peirone was the top scorer with five goals scored .
Argentina, Brazil and Colombia as the three top-ranked teams after the tournament qualified for the 2003 U-17 World Cup in Finland .
