Qualification for U-17 world championship

The U-16 soccer Asian championship (U-17 until 2006) is a soccer competition between the best Asian national teams for male soccer players under the age of 16. The competition is also the Asian qualification for the U-17 soccer world championship.

The championship is organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The tournament was played for the first time in 1985. The tournament has been held every two years since 1986.

Currently, 16 teams qualify for the final round in groups ( ASEAN , East Asia and West Asia as well as South and Central Asia), which are first divided into four groups. The group first and second determined in a simple league system qualify for the quarter-finals, from which it is played in a knockout round. Third place has not been played out since 2008.

The last tournament was held in Malaysia in 2018 . Japan won this against Tajikistan in the final . With this third victory, Japan is the sole record winner, followed by North Korea , South Korea , China , Saudi Arabia and Oman with two titles each.
