The seventh U-17 Asian Football Championship was held in 1996 in Thailand . The tournament started on September 17th and ended on October 1st . Winner was Oman by a 1: 0 win over the hosts . The two finalists qualified together with Third Bahrain for the 1997 U-17 World Cup .

Thailand was set to host the finals. The other nations determined the other participants. In a group in Nagoya Japan prevailed against Malaysia , Bangladesh and Brunei . In another group in Seoul, South Korea prevailed against Indonesia , Laos and Taiwan .
Finals
The final round was held in Chiang Mai from September 17 to October 1, 1996 .

The finalists Oman and Thailand as well as the third Bahrain qualified for the 1997 U-17 World Cup .
