The 2016 U-16 Asian Football Championship (officially: AFC U-16 Championship 2016 ) was the 17th edition of the tournament and took place for the first time in India from September 15 to October 2, 2016 . The tournament served as the Asian qualification for the 2017 U-17 World Cup , which is also taking place in India. The best four teams qualified for it.

The Iraq won the tournament in the penalty shoot-out with 4: 3 in the final against Iran . The two had prevailed in the semifinals against Japan and the defending champion North Korea . The top scorer was the Iraqi Mohammed Dawood, who scored six goals.

Eligible players were born on or after January 1, 2000.

qualification

Of the 47 member associations of the AFC, 45 registered to participate. The group draw took place on June 5, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur . The teams were divided according to their geographical location into the western region, consisting of West, Central and South Asia, and the eastern region, consisting of Southeast and East Asia and Australia. The western region consisted of six groups with four teams and the eastern region of one group with five teams and four groups with four teams.

The games of most groups of four were played between September 16 and 20, 2015, only in group H the games took place from September 2 to 6, 2015. The individual group of five already started on September 12, 2015. The eleven group winners and the five best runners-up qualified for the finals alongside hosts India, which also took part in the qualification.

After the end of the qualification, Nepal was subsequently disqualified for playing an ineligible player and Kuwait was subsequently disqualified due to the FIFA suspension and replaced by Kyrgyzstan and Yemen .

The group draw took place on May 26, 2016 in the Indian state of Goa . The teams were divided into four different pots according to their placements at the last event in September 2014 and drawn into four different groups with four teams each. Host India was already set as the group head of group A.

Squad

Each team consisted of a maximum of 23 players, at least three of whom had to be goalkeepers . Eligible players were born on or after January 1, 2000.

The group winners and runners-up qualified for the quarter-finals, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. If, after applying criteria 1 to 3, several teams still occupied the same place in the table, criteria 1 to 3 were reapplied, but only for the direct encounters between the teams in question. Should this also not lead to a definitive placement, criteria 5 to 9 were applied.
  5. Goal difference from all group matches
  6. Number of goals in all group matches
  7. If it had only been about two teams and these two were on the pitch, there would have been a penalty shoot-out between them .
  8. Lower number of points through yellow and red cards (yellow card 1 point, yellow-red and red card 3 points, yellow card followed by a direct red card 4 points)

Final round

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final are played in the knockout system . If the games in the final round are tied after the regular playing time of 90 minutes, there will be two extra times of 15 minutes and possibly (if there is still no winner) a penalty shoot-out .
