The eighth U-17 Asian Football Championship was held in Qatar in 1998 . The tournament started on September 3rd and ended on September 17th . The winner was Thailand with a victory in the penalty shootout against the hosts . The two finalists qualified for the 1999 U-17 World Cup .

Result
The finalists Thailand and Qatar qualified for the 1999 U-17 World Cup . The third Bahrain had to compete in the relegation against Australia , the winner of the U-17 soccer championship in 1999 and was eliminated after two defeats.
