The twelfth U-17 Asian Football Championship was held in Singapore in 2006 . The tournament started on September 3rd and ended on September 17th . The winner was Japan with a 4: 2 victory after extra time against North Korea . The two finalists qualified with the two losing semi-finalists Tajikistan and Syria for the U-17 World Cup in 2007 .

Singapore was set to host the finals. The other nations determined the other participants in 14 groups:

1 Laos was disqualified.

The 16 teams played a single round in four groups of four . The first two in each group qualified for the quarter-finals.

The final round was held from September 3 to September 17, 2004 at Jalan Besar Stadium in Kallang and Bishan Stadium in Bishan .
