Manuel Said Ali

Manuel Said Ali (born October 21, 1861 in Petrópolis , † May 27, 1953 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian Romance scholar , Lusitanist and grammarian.

life and work

Ali, whose father was a Turk and his mother (as well as his wife) was German, started an apprenticeship as a bookseller in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 14. He became a teacher of German, French, English and geography at the military academy, as well as at the later Colégio Pedro II . There he had students: Manuel Bandeira , Sousa da Silveira , Antenor Nascentes , Arthur Alexandre Moses (1886–1967) and Alfredo de Araújo Lopes da Costa (1885–1966). Capistrano de Abreu was one of his friends .

Due to the reception of the worldwide linguistic discussion of his time, Ali developed into an original Romanist and Lusitanist with considerable influence on the development of Lusitan studies.
