Mattéo Guendouzi Olié (born April 14, 1999 in Poissy ) is a French football player of Moroccan descent on the position of midfielder .

Club career

From the capital to Brittany

Mattéo Guendouzi was born on April 14, 1999 in the municipality of Poissy, just over 30 kilometers northwest of the capital Paris . Guendouzi began his club career as a football player in 2005 in the youth division of the Paris Saint-Germain club, where he played in all divisions until 2014. As a 15-year-old he switched from the Paris Football Academy to that of FC Lorient , at that time represented by his first men's team in the top French football league , Ligue 1 . The midfielder with Moroccan roots was introduced to this very position over the course of the following two years, where he made his debut in men's football for the B-team of the club from the Breton port city of Lorient in the 2015/16 season . Shortly after he moved to the still young academy of FC Lorient, he was followed by his younger brother Milan (* 2001), who was also considered talented, and also became an academy player in Brittany. On April 2, 2016, just a few days before his 17th birthday, Mattéo Guendouzi made his debut in a 1-0 away defeat by SO Romorantin in the fourth-rate Championnat de France Amateur , or CFA for short. In the game he was substituted on by coach Régis Le Bris , who also appears as academy manager, in the 62nd minute of the game for Mohamed Mara . This was followed by five more championship appearances for him until the beginning of June 2016, where he was on the field from the start in his second game and was substituted in the 80th minute. He then played the other four games over the full 90 minutes.

Breakthrough as a professional at FC Lorient

In the season 2016/17 he found his way into the professional team under the former long-time Lorient player and now acting as football coach Sylvain Ripoll , in which he made his professional debut on October 15, 2016 in a 1: 2 home defeat against FC Nantes when he came on the pitch in the 76th minute of play for Algerian international Walid Mesloub . Before that, Guendouzi had already played a few championship games in the second team by the beginning of October and signed his first professional contract in September. He was also used in July of this year at the Tournoi des Centers de Ploufragan , also called Trophée des centers de formation , and was voted the most hopeful player of the tournament. In his second championship appearance in the following round, the last one under Ripoll, who was replaced by Franck Haise as interim coach and then by Bernard Casoni as a fixed obligation due to the team's poor performance, the 17-year-old played in central midfield for the full length of the game by. Under the 30-time French national player Casoni, the young midfielder was hardly considered and could not prevail against the more experienced competition in his position around Arnold Mvuemba , Cafú or the aforementioned Walid Mesloub. Due to the departure of Didier Ibrahim Ndong , who also played in this position , Guendouzi got the chance to prove himself at least for a short time.

During a conversation during the winter break, it was decided that Guendouzi would at least have more match practice in the second half of the season, but this did not materialize later. After Casoni used it from the beginning on January 8, in the first competitive game of the new year, in a 2-1 home win over OGC Nice in the first round of the French Football Cup 2016/17 , he received one in the twelfth minute yellow card and was warned to leave the field early in the event of another offense. Since he behaved conspicuously in duels, Casoni decided to take him off the field in the 55th minute. Since he did not return the handshake of his coach after being replaced, he was almost completely ignored for the rest of the season and spent most of the time with the B-team and in the French junior national teams. Due to several - partly injury-related - failures, he completed his only other competitive game this spring on March 5, when he was on the field for 90 minutes in the league game against Olympique Marseille . In contrast to his eight appearances in the top division of the country and the first round appearance in the cup, Guendouzi completed 17 games in the French fourth division and took eleventh place with the team. With the professionals, he could not secure relegation and rose with the team that finished 18th in the final classification and could not do anything in the relegation play-offs against ES Troyes AC , from Ligue 2 .

In the following season 2017/18 he had to assert himself in his traditional position against more experienced signings like Gaël Danic or Fabien Lemoine . Under Mickaël Landreau , who took over the coaching position of Casoni during the season break and thus his first position as head coach since the end of his career as an active player, the midfielder with Moroccan roots quickly found his way back into the professional team and was already used in the opening game against US Quevilly . After that he was regularly in the squad until the eighth round, but was used irregularly by Landreau. His positions varied mostly from the central to the defensive midfield. In the eight-round game, the then table-topping FC Lorient met AJ Auxerre, who was in the back of the table, and had to leave the field prematurely in the 45th minute after a red card and was subsequently suspended for two games. After that he quickly found his way back into the team and mostly played as a regular in midfield until the 16th championship round.

In the half-time break of the match with Valenciennes FC there was another scandal between Guendouzi and his coach. Landreau then changed him at half-time, after which Guendouzi was no longer part of the professional squad for three months. After he also turned down a possible contract extension with Lorient, it was clear that he would leave the club in the foreseeable future. At that time he was being courted by Juventus Turin, among others . Also Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester City were among the more prominent clubs who were interested in Guendouzi. At the end of February 2018, Guendouzi returned to the professional team of the French second division club and then played eight games in central midfield, with occasional assists in the 32nd round. This season there was also an appearance in the Coupe de France 2017/18 , in which the team was eliminated in the second round, and two games in the Coupe de la Ligue 2017/18 , in which the team was eliminated in the third round the end came. After the team was represented for a longer period among the top four in the league, they ended the season in seventh place in the table. By then, Guendouzi had completed 18 championship appearances this season. He also took part in a game of the reserve team in the CFA.

Switch to Arsenal FC

On July 11, 2018, Guendouzi's move to the Premier League was announced, but he was signed by Arsenal FC . For a rumored transfer fee between seven and eight million pounds and bonus payments, the Frenchman signed a four-year contract. After joining the Gunners , the midfielder was given the number 29 shirt previously worn by Granit Xhaka , who in turn took the number 34 shirt from Francis Coquelin , who had left the team at the end of the previous season. Under Unai Emery , who had recently taken over from long-term coach Arsène Wenger , he made his debut on July 28 in a 5-1 win in a friendly against his former training club Paris Saint-Germain in Singapore with the professionals of Arsenal FC. Almost two weeks later, he made his debut in the first game of the 2018/19 season on August 12 , when he was also in this position for the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 home defeat to reigning champions Manchester City playing Xhaka was used. In doing so, he had most of the Gunners' possession of the ball .

National team career

Guendouzi gained his first experience in a youth national team when he made his debut in the French U-18 national team in 2016 . In the 2-0 defeat against his colleagues from Poland , the midfielder came onto the pitch in the second half. Under the U-18 national coach and former professional player Bernard Diomède , he played in a total of seven internationals until his last U-18 international match, a 3-0 defeat against Serbia . Three months after his last international match, Guendouzi made his debut in a friendly against Morocco for the French U-19s and scored the goal to make it 2-0 in the 83rd minute. Two days later he completed his second and thus also the last U-19 international match; Again against Morocco.

At the beginning of 2017, Hervé Renard , who had coached the Moroccan senior team since the previous year , contacted the Moroccan Guendouzi to persuade him to play for the Moroccan association in the future. In March 2017, Guendouzi's father met Renard and informed him that his son would continue his career in the national team of the French Football Association. After his appearances in the French U-18 and U-19 teams under Diomède, Guendouzi made his debut on November 11, 2017 in the U-20 national team of his home country ; in this case Morocco of all places was the enemy again. In March 2018 he completed two more friendly international matches against his senior colleagues from the United States as a regular in midfield under coach Philippe Montanier .
