Bernard Diomède (* 23. January 1974 in Saint-Doulchard ) is a former French football player , who with during his playing career in 1996, AJ Auxerre , the French double won and with the French national team two years later at the 1998 FIFA World Cup title win with the Equipe Tricolore .

Player career

society

Bernard Diomède began his career in the youth of AJ Auxerre , for whose professional team he made his Ligue 1 debut in 1992 . In his first season he played seven games for the Burgundians and was unable to score a goal. In the following season it was difficult for him to play in the team and received only two more missions. In his third season at Auxerre, he managed to impose himself as a regular player and played 26 games and scored three goals. In the following 1995/96 season he finally established himself as a winger at Auxerre. With 9 goals in 33 games, he had a share in the success of the Burgundians, who won the French championship for the first time in 1996 and even won the national double with the Coupe de France de football .

Diomède stayed in Auxerre for four more years, but could no longer build on these successes with the team. In the summer of 2000 he transferred to the English Premier League for Liverpool FC for £ 3million . In Liverpool he never succeeded in asserting himself and getting consistent performances like in Auxerre. In 2½ years he ran on only in two league games for the Reds and was loaned back to France to AC Ajaccio in January 2003 . With the Corsicans he found his form again thanks to the game practice he had received and played his way into the regular formation.

Ajaccio took Diomède under contract for a year after the loan period expired and the winger scored seven goals in 32 games in Ligue 1. He was then signed by second division US Créteil . After twelve games and four goals scored, he left the club and signed with Clermont Foot . At the third division club Clermont, he could no longer build on his previous performance and received no ongoing contract after the end of the 2005/06 season. After not finding a new club, he ended his active career.

National team

Bernard Diomède made his debut in 1998 for the French national football team . After playing five friendly matches and not scoring, he was called up in the French selection for the 1998 World Cup . He was used in the two group games on June 18, 1998 against Saudi Arabia and on June 24, 1998 against Denmark from the start as a winger. The last 16 game against Paraguay four days later, in which he was substituted for Stéphane Guivarc'h after 77 minutes , was also his last game for France. He was able to celebrate as world champion on July 12, 1998 after Brazil was defeated in the final.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Diomède studied at the Center for Law and Economics of Sports at the Université de Limoges and obtained a coaching license . In 2008 he founded the “Académie Diomède” football school with his wife. In September 2015 he became the head coach of the French U17 national team. In August 2016 he took over the U18 national team as a coach, in summer 2017 he took up the position in the U19 team and in August 2018 he switched to the U20 national team's position.
