Fabien Alain Barthez (born June 28, 1971 in Lavelanet , Ariège ) is a former French football goalkeeper and current automobile racing driver .

Soccer

society

Barthez played as a professional for Toulouse FC , AS Monaco , Manchester United , Olympique Marseille , FC Nantes and in the French national team (Équipe tricolore) . After he could not find a new club in the summer of 2006, Barthez announced his resignation in early October 2006, but two months later he revised and signed a contract with FC Nantes. There, too, he resigned in April 2007 after allegedly drunk fans attacked him after a lost league game and involved him in a fight. Barthez left town with his family just a day later.

National team

Barthez played his first international match for the French national team in 1994. However, he only became a goalkeeper after the 1996 European Championship . He is the second goalkeeper after Peter Shilton who has not conceded a goal in ten World Cup games. He equalized the record in the semi-finals at the 2006 World Cup against Portugal, Marco Materazzi prevented an increase in the final to eleven games with his goal to make it 1-1. Alongside Sepp Maier , Dino Zoff and Iker Casillas, he is one of only four goalkeepers who have become both world and European champions. He is also one of the few goalkeepers to have played two World Cup finals. In addition, he was with France in the European Championship in 2000 and in the Confederation Cup final in 2003.

Style of play

Barthez was a very fast and agile goalkeeper and repeatedly showed his exceptional talent with his spectacular saves on the line. One of his weaknesses was high balls. He also left the 5-meter area at a noticeable speed and tried to intercept cross balls.

Doping ban

During a doping control on October 3, 1995, Barthez was found to have had hashish consumption. This does not promote performance, but leads to "positive disinhibition". Barthez was banned from the French Football Association for four months in January 1996.

Title wins and awards

Others

  • His father, Alain Barthez , who died in November 2009 , was a successful rugby player who played an international match. Fabien Barthez himself is the father of three children.
  • In 2013 he was honored with an honorary award (“Champion des champions d'honneur”) by the French sports daily L'Équipe .

Motorsport

In 2008 Barthez made his debut as a car racing driver in the Porsche Matmut Carrera Cup France and completed a total of eight races in that championship season as well as the two races of the THP Spider Cup as part of the Grand Prix de Pau . After appearing sporadically in various series in 2009, including again for two races in the French Carrera Cup, he took part in six races in the French GT championship the following year - with a third place in Dijon together with his partner Morgan Moullin-Traffort - as well as the Lamborghini Super Trofeo race weekend in Le Castellet . In 2011 he drove back five races in the French GT Championship and also contested the first Grand Prix de Pau Electrique .
