The Division 1 1988/89 was the 51th staging of the professional French football league. Champion became Olympique Marseille for the fifth time since 1937 and 17 years after his last title win .
The first game day was July 15, 1988, the last game day was May 31, 1989. There was a six-week winter break between December 18 and February 3.
societies
The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- two clubs from the far north ( Lille OSC , Racing Lens ),
- three from Paris and Bourgogne ( Paris Saint-Germain , Matra Racing Paris , AJ Auxerre ),
- three from the north-east ( FC Metz and the two promoted teams Racing Strasbourg and FC Sochaux ),
- three from the northwest (relegation winner SM Caen , FC Nantes , Stade Laval ),
- two from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux , FC Toulouse ),
- seven from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , Montpellier La Paillade SC , Olympique Marseille , SC Toulon-Var , OGC Nice , AS Cannes , defending champions AS Monaco ).
Season course
This season, the three-point rule was introduced on an experimental basis ; however, the attempt was not continued afterwards. There was no significant increase in the number of hits; Lille's 8-0 victory took place on the last day of the game against Laval, who was already relegated. If the two-point rule had been retained, only a few changes would have resulted - and only in the middle of the table between sixth and thirteenth place. In the event of a tie, the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement.
Before the start of the season, two teams were rated particularly highly, both of which had again invested significantly in their squad: Olympique Marseille and Matra Racing Paris. Marseille, already championship favorites last year, now had a team with national players from three continents because its president Tapie “didn't do things by halves” on the transfer market. In the French capital, however, it was local rivals Paris Saint-Germain who played at the top, while Racing narrowly escaped relegation in the end and lost its major sponsor Matra . PSG, which with the zone defense operated and also on home soil to a counter-attack whenever sat, dominated the first round and was two points ahead of Auxerre Herbstmeister. At Marseille, on the other hand, after two games with only one point on the credit side, the president replaced coach Banide with Gili , a "nobody" in professional business who previously worked at Olympique's youth center. Under his leadership, OM worked its way up to the leadership duo, but before Christmas was still half a dozen points behind Paris.
On matchday 27, Marseille caught up with Paris, but were still one point behind four laps before the end of the season. At the beginning of May, the southern French won the top duel 1-0 and then could not be taken away from the championship lead. Ten days after completing the league games, Olympique defeated Monaco, which had worked its way up to third place in Division 1 , in the cup final , thus securing the doublé for the second time in the club's history . "Two French-German pairs of players made a significant contribution to this success - Le Roux / Förster in central defense and Papin / Allofs in attack".
In the lower region of the table, Lens was hopelessly beaten early on, lost a total of 18 of his 19 away matches and won only two games in front of a home crowd. Laval was already relegated before the last match day, while Caen and Racing Paris only then knew they would be in the top division in the following season . In contrast, Strasbourg then had to contest the barrages and was subject to the second division Brest Armorique FC , who was thus the third promoted team next to FC Mulhouse and Olympique Lyon .
