Detlef Weigel (* 1951 in Essen ) is a German diplomat who was ambassador to Latvia from 2008 to 2010 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Weigel studied German and Romance languages at the Ruhr University Bochum , the University of Poitiers and the University of Siena .

After completing his studies, he joined the Foreign Service in 1978 and after completing the career test for the higher service from 1981 to 1984 initially worked in the Department of Arms Control and Disarmament of the Foreign Office in Bonn as a consultant for Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions (MBFR ), the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) and Concept Development & Experimentation (CDE). During this time, between 1982 and 1983, he was also a member of the German delegation to the CSCE follow-up conference in Madrid and subsequently until 1986 a member of the German delegation to the Conference on Confidence and Security- Building Measures (KVAE) in Stockholm .

After serving as permanent representative of the Ambassador to Jamaica from 1986 to 1988 , he worked as a consultant for the United Nations , Asia , Latin America and Africa in the Political Department of the Federal Chancellery in Bonn and then from 1992 to 1997 as a consultant in the planning staff of the Foreign Office .

Between 1998 and 2000 Weigel was Deputy Head of the Political Department at the Embassy in France and then Deputy Head of the Planning Staff at the Foreign Office in Berlin , before he was Envoy and Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to Spain from 2004 to 2008 .

In August 2008, Weigel received his accreditation as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Latvia, succeeding Eberhard Schuppius , who in turn became Consul General in Guangzhou . He held this position until he was replaced by Klaus Burkhardt in August 2010.
