The Division 1 1946-47 was the ninth staging of the professional French football league. Champion was CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , a club that had only existed since 1945.
The first game day was August 18, 1946, the last game day was May 18, 1947. There was a 14-day “winter break” over New Year's Eve .
societies
Eligible to participate were the clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th place (exception: Lyon OU , which was relegated as 15th last year), and the four promoted teams from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north (defending champions OSC Lille , CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , Racing Lens ),
- four from Paris or Champagne ( Racing Paris , Red Star Olympique , promoted Stade Français , Stade Reims ),
- three from the northeast ( FC Metz , Racing Strasbourg , newly promoted FC Nancy ),
- three from the northwest ( Le Havre AC , FC Rouen , Stade Rennes UC ),
- seven from the south ( AS Saint-Étienne , Girondins Bordeaux , the two promoted Toulouse FC and SO Montpellier , FC Sète , Olympique Marseille , AS Cannes ).
Season course
It was a year in which the north-east dominated the south: six clubs among the top eight in the table and champions and runners-up with Roubaix-Tourcoing and Reims - who finished third and fourth in the previous season - came from there. These two kept the race for the title open for a relatively long time, and despite a home defeat against CORT in mid-April, the red and whites from Champagne led the ranking until the third from last game day. Then, however, Roubaix-Tourcoing did not show any more nakedness, also had the easier remaining program - among other things against the two bottom of the table - and in the end even a clear visual advantage. Two players stood out from this team: goalkeeper Julien Darui , France's undisputed number one at the time, and striker Heinrich “Henri” Hiltl , an Austrian who had been naturalized before the war , who despite his 36 years scored a total of 23 goals, many of them in the last quarter of an hour, very often by a cut , direct free kick and often decisive in view of the eight 1-0 successes of his team alone.
Defending champion Lille still had a lot of offensive power (second best storm in the league) and home strength despite the departures of Bihel and Bourbotte , but against the two top teams they only managed one win in three (0-1) defeats. The attack from Metz also impressed with its 93 goals this season, but only four away wins were only enough for a midfield position. Stade Français, the team of coach Helenio Herrera with its “brilliant offensive duo Ben Barek / Nyers ”, was able to place itself particularly high among the promoters . Among the four relegated teams were Le Havre and Rouen, both Norman clubs; for the following season , as Division 1 was reduced to 18 participants, the FC Sochaux and Olympique Alès were added.
