Division 1 1977/78

The Division 1 1978/79 was the 41st competition of professional French football league. Racing Strasbourg became champion for the first time in its club history .

The first match day was July 19, 1978, the last match day was June 1, 1979. There was a winter break from December 18, 1978 to January 26, 1979.

societies

Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th, plus three promoted teams from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.

Strasbourg was in first place after the fifth match day, was not defeated for a long time and was three points ahead of defending champions Monaco and five over Saint-Étienne in November. Then the Alsatians lost at Paris SG, lost points against Laval in their home country Stade de la Meinau and got under the wheels in Nantes. While Monaco was slacking off, Nantes had developed into Strasbourg's main competitor, but after the short winter break, Strasbourg managed to keep the “yellow” and “green” - as Nantes and Saint-Étienne are called because of their dress colors into the 21st century - at a distance hold, which, however, was a maximum of two points in the second half of the season. Only a smooth victory in Lyon on matchday 38 did Racing finally secure the title. The three top teams each had an impressive home strength: Strasbourg (with four draws) and Nantes (even only two draws) remained unbeaten at home, and Saint-Étienne suffered a defeat but won his remaining 18 home games. Nantes continued their impressive streak - their last home defeat: on May 15, 1976 against Paris SG - and their only five goals conceded in 19 league games in front of their own audience constituted a new league record.

At the end of the table, the Reims team in the traditional red and white jerseys was not able to keep up early on - they were the only one who could score more than one goal in Strasbourg - and, far behind, they were the only direct relegation zone. Newcomer Paris FC had to go to the Barrages , where he was left behind against the better runners-up in Division 2 , Racing Lens , and Valenciennes even remained without a fight in the top division because second division champions FC Gueugnon decided not to advance: the amateur club was not ready to to accept the professional status that is mandatory in the “footballing upper house”. In addition to Lens, only Stade Brest was promoted to Division 1 for the following season .

    Relegation

After FC Gueugnon was refused promotion as Division 2 champions due to amateur status , the 18th Division 1 (Valenciennes) was spared relegation. The playoff winner of the second division then played against the penultimate of the first division.
