In the 1980/81 season, however, he was denied a mission. During the season Wagner lost his regular place and only played in eleven games (no hits).

FC Mulhouse

For the new season, Wagner left Strasbourg after ten years of club membership and signed on with league rivals and local rivals FC Mulhouse . However, he could not fight for a regular place in Mulhouse and only came to seven missions (one hit). In the end, Mulhouse was relegated from what was then Division 1.

Entente Montceau

After two years without a club, Wagner moved to Entente Montceau . In his first season Wagner came to 22 missions, where he scored one goal. In the following season he also came to 22 missions, where he scored three goals. At the end of the season he ended his career.

On October 10, 1979, Wagner made his debut in the Equipe Tricolore , France's senior national team .
