The Division 2 1978/79 was the 40th staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from August 11, 1978 to May 26, 1979; from December 18th to January 12th there was a winter break.
Second division champions were FC Gueugnon .
societies
The 27 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- Group A: Relegated Troyes Aube Football , promoted EDS Montluçon , AJ Auxerre , EAC Chaumont , SAS Épinal , SR Saint-Dié , Racing Club Franc-Comtois Besançon , FC Gueugnon , US Toulouse , AS Béziers , Olympique Alès , promoted Montpellier La Paillade SC , AC Arles , Olympique Avignon , FC Martigues , SC Toulon , AS Cannes , Gazélec FC Ajaccio
- Group B: US Dunkerque , US Grand Boulogne , relegated Racing Lens , promoted SC Amiens , relegated FC Rouen , Amicale Lucé , US Melun , promoted US Orléans , promoted FC Mulhouse , promoted AAJ Blois , Stade Rennes , EA Guingamp , Stade Brest , Stade Quimper , FC Tours , LB Châteauroux , FC Limoges , AS Angoulême
Only the first in the group were eligible for promotion. This season, a relegation between the worst-placed first division team who was not directly relegated and the best second division team not directly eligible for promotion was introduced, which was not intended at the beginning of the season, but was then set because of the conflict over Gueugnon's promotion and took place regularly until 1993.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
Of the relegated from the first division only Racing Lens played for the immediate promotion, while Rouen found himself in the upper midfield of his group and Troyes was even "passed" straight through to the third division. Lens, who also had the most goal-hungry attack of the season, ended up bowing to the Bretons of Stade Brestois. In the other group there was a head-to-head race between Gueugnon and Avignon, in which four other teams were involved with good opportunities until shortly before the end of the season and in which the decision was only made on the last day of the game. In addition, after the 34th matchday, only the goal difference had tipped the balance in favor of the " Burgundy smithy" - Forgerons is the nickname for Gueugnon's players, which was used in France into the 21st century. Of the six promoters of the previous year, only one had to return immediately to the third division with SC Amiens.
In the 612 matches, 1,553 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.54 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers in Group A were Antoine Trivino (Gueugnon) with 24 goals and in Group B Patrick Martet from Brest with 26 goals; The latter won the league top scorer's crown. For the following season , Paris FC and Stade Reims from Division 1 were added; from the third highest league rose six teams with US Nœux-les-Mines , Le Havre AC , FC Thionville , UES Montmorillon , US Tavaux-Damparis and CS Thonon .

No promotion for amateur teams
With the FC Gueugnon, a club had qualified for promotion to Division 1 , which was hostile to professional football. The club mainly recruited its players from the region and trained many of them themselves. He paid for his season budget on the one hand from his entry fees, which were paid by over 9,000 spectators at the derby against AJ Auxerre on the last day of the game; on the other hand, the club was also able to rely on the support of a local metalworking company at that time, where numerous players worked.
Therefore, the club management applied to the responsible body of the football association not to have to accept professional status in the top division, but to continue playing as an amateur club. This request was outright rejected by the groupement of the Club Professionnels . Thereupon the FC Gueugnon, who had meanwhile also become champion of the second division (see below) , on the promotion, from which not the group runner-up from Avignon, but the first division 18 benefited. It was not until 1988 that FC accepted professionalism for themselves, and even until 1995 before they were promoted to the top division again.
Determination of the master
The two group winners met each other on a return game to determine this year's division 2 champion. The FC Gueugnon prevailed both in front of their own and in front of foreign audiences (1-0 and 2-1), whereby the amateur team from Burgundy secured the championship title.

Relegation
According to the same mode, the two runners-up fought to see who was allowed to contest the barrages for another promotion place against the third from bottom of the top division. Avignon initially won 2-0, but lost the second leg in Lens 1: 4, so that the northern French got this opportunity. Due to the promotion waiver of FC Gueugnon and the relegation for the 18th of Division 1 , the US Valenciennes-Anzin , it then happened that Lens against the first division 19. Paris FC had to compete. These two games each ended in a goalless draw, the second of which after extra time; the second division then prevailed in the decisive penalty shoot-out and rose to the first division.
