The Division 2 1933/34 was the first host the second highest French football league , officially under the name Championnat de Division 2 firmierte. Second division champion was Red Star Olympique from Saint-Ouen .
societies
The six clubs that had not finished better than eighth place in the two seasons of the newly created Division 1 in the preseason , as well as those 18 clubs that had only assumed professional status this season were eligible to participate. This second division was played in two regionally composed groups, which - after US Suisse Paris , FC Arménienne de Lyon and FAC Nice withdrew their teams from play shortly before or after the start of the game and returned their licenses - became a northern group with 13 and a southern group with eight participants. US Suisse did not even stop participating until the beginning of March 1934, in the middle of the second half of the season; all games played up to then were taken out of the evaluation. The following teams were represented this season:
- Group north
- five clubs from the far north ( Racing Roubaix , US Valenciennes-Anzin , AC Amiens , US Tourcoing , Racing Calais ),
- two from the capital region (the two relegated Red Star Olympique and Club Français ),
- three from the northeast (the two relegated FC Metz and FC Mulhouse , plus Racing Strasbourg ),
- three from the northwest ( Rouen FC , AC Le Havre , US Saint-Servan-Saint-Malo ).
- Group south
- two clubs from Lyonnais ( AS Saint-Étienne , FC Lyon ),
- two from Languedoc ( SO Béziers , relegated Olympique Alès ),
- two from Bordeaux ( CD Español and SC de la Bastidienne ),
- two from the southeast (relegated FC Hyères , AS Monaco ).
There was only a direct promotion and relegation depending on the sporting result between the first and second professional division. Could, however, a Zweitdivisionär only descend when he made his license or it was taken from him, and so were former amateur teams from the Division d'Honneur only the following season in the Division 2 ascend when the association were authorized professional To adopt status.
Results, tables and the course of the season
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
In the tables, an (A) marks the relegated team from Division 1.

The games in the northern group took place between September 3rd and May 13th. There was no winter break; point games were also played on Christmas and New Year's Eve. In the 156 encounters 675 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 4.3 goals per game.
From the start of the season, Red Star, Rouen and Mulhouse made the race for direct promotion among themselves, with Rouen in first place on the majority of match days. The team had by far the most dangerous attack, in which the 20-year-old Jean Nicolas scored 54 of the 85 goals of the “Red Devils” alone - more than the entire teams of eight of the twelve group opponents. However, Rouen only had an average defense and was the only one from the leading trio to suffer a home defeat. And when the eleven only reached a draw at their neighbors from Le Havre on the last day of the match, Red Star made up the points deficit on Rouen thanks to their clear home win against Metz and finished first thanks to the slightly better goal difference. Metz had always occupied a double-digit place in the table throughout the entire series, but was still able to fight their way forward in the second half of the season.
At the bottom of the table, a trio had formed after just a few weeks with Saint-Servan, Calais and Club Français, which consistently “successfully” defended positions 11 to 13. The Club Français and the US Saint-Servan-Saint-Malo returned their licenses at the end of the calendar year. Racing Lens and SM Caen were accepted into the circle of professional clubs for the first time in the following season .

The games in the southern group took place between September 3rd and April 8th. There was no winter break; point games were also played on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. In the 56 encounters 229 goals were scored; this corresponds to an average of 4.1 goals per game.
In contrast to the northern relay, Alès had almost a start-to-finish victory in the South group and from November onwards could not be ousted from first place - not even by his only dangerous pursuer, AS Saint-Étienne, who after all is flawless at home Record with seven wins in as many games. Monaco was only four points behind Alès in the end, but from the penultimate place had only been able to advance to third place through a successful second half.
In the lower part of the table, Bastidienne Bordeaux was a permanent guest, while Lyon and especially Béziers were at least temporarily placed in the upper midfield before they crashed in the second half of the season. Monaco, Hyères, Béziers and Lyon gave up their licenses after the end of the season, and the two Bordeaux clubs merged. The AS Villeurbanne was included in the circle of professional clubs for the first time in the following season.

Promotion relegation
For two more promotion places in Division 1 , a relegation round took place from May 13th , for which the two runners-up as well as the third and fourth placed from the northern group were qualified. Before it started, Rouen decided not to participate. These barrages between the three remaining teams produced the following results:
