The Division 2 1973-74 was the 35th staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The second division champions were the Lille OSC .
societies
The 27 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, mainly divided according to regional criteria (one with teams from the northwest and one with teams from the southeast). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- Group A: US Dunkerque , newly promoted SC Hazebrouck , US Grand Boulogne , OSC Lille , relegated US Valenciennes-Anzin , AC Cambrai , EAC Chaumont , FC Rouen , Stade Laval , US Le Mans , Stade Brest , FC Lorient , AAJ Blois , FC Bourges , EDS Montluçon , Racing Club Franc-Comtois Besançon , Stade Poitiers PEP , promoted ES La Rochelle
- Group B: Relegated Red Star FC , promoted Paris Saint-Germain FC , CA Mantes , Entente Bagneaux-Fontainebleau-Nemours , promoted JGA Nevers , FC Mulhouse , promoted CS Vittel , FC Gueugnon , LB Châteauroux , AS Angoulême , US Toulouse , promoted AS Béziers , FC Sète , Olympique Avignon , AC Arles , SC Toulon , AS Cannes , relegated AC Ajaccio
The respective group winners and the winner of the play-offs between the two runners- up were eligible for promotion . This time, there was no relegation between the worst-placed first division clubs who were not directly relegated and the best second division clubs who were not directly eligible for promotion.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference and if this should be the same - as this year between Mantes and Ajaccio or Gueugnon and Béziers - the higher number of hits made the decisive factor for the placement. Each team received an additional bonus point regardless of the outcome of the game for each game in which they had scored at least three goals, as well as for each victory with two or more goals difference. This should promote attacking football. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
In both groups, the decision for the first two places had already been made several weeks before the end of the season, and the two direct promoters Red Star - who managed to return to Division 1 right away - and Lille no longer had to fear on the last matchday, then two more To have to play relegation matches. After they were held, Valenciennes-Anzin, the most dangerous team had to plan for another year in the second division. The third first division relegation of the preseason, Ajaccio, was even further away from an immediate promotion; The Corsicans only reached a midfield position in terms of sport and were financially in a desperate situation, so they will be relegated to the third division voluntarily for the coming season. At the bottom of the table, five of the six newcomers to the league fought against immediate relegation, which nevertheless overtook three of them at the end of the season, while the other two escaped it only thanks to their better goal difference. This was only a good season for the sixth climber, because the PSG club in the capital managed to "march through" from the third to the first division.
After a one-year attempt ( 1968/69 ) again this season - and this time in the top two divisions and for three years - the bonus point rule introduced had only minimal success with regard to the intention of promoting higher-scoring, more attractive and thus revenue-increasing games; the average number of hits per game only increased by 0.1. The regulation also only influenced one single decision regarding promotion or relegation: without bonus points, FC Gueugnon would have been third from last in Group B and would have been relegated, which instead hit the JGA Nevers.
1,701 hits were scored in the 612 encounters; this corresponds to an average of just under 2.8 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers were Erwin Wilczek (Valenciennes) in Group A with 26 goals and in Group B Nestor Combin from Red Star with 24 goals; thus Wilczek won the league top scorer's crown. For the following season came with the AS Nancy , the Paris FC and CS Sedan three relegated from Division 1 ; from the third highest league SC Amiens , Stade Quimper , FC Tours , AJ Auxerre , SAS Épinal and FC Martigues rose. The second division then played with 35 teams.
