The Division 2 1957-58 was the 19th staging of the second highest French football league . Second division champions were the FC Nancy .

societies

Eligible were the 17 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division after the previous season or had given up their license - voluntarily or by force; there were also three first division relegated teams and two professional newcomers.

Thus, the following 22 teams played for the division 2 championship this season :

Before the Second World War, there was only a direct promotion and relegation depending on the sporting result between the first and second professional division; after that, a descent to the third highest division had been introduced over a few years, but this was no longer in force. In addition, a second division could be relegated if he gave up his license or if it was revoked. Previous amateur teams, on the other hand, could only continue to move up to Division 2 for the following season if they received approval from the responsible association FFF to assume professional status.
This season there was no relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

In order to equalize the league sizes in the first and second division, the association had set the number of direct promoters at four this season. An exciting competition ensued for these places, in which even the two first division relegated Nancy - the only team in Division 2 unbeaten in front of their own audience - and Rennes - the team with the most own and the fewest goals - could only be sure very late, immediately to return to the footballing "upper house". After that, it was even open until the last match day who would accompany these two. It was surprising that in addition to Strasbourg and the Girondins Bordeaux, the third relegated team from last year, both new professional teams played their debut for promotion, which Limoges ultimately managed under his coach Flamion , while Forbach had given up too many points, especially at his home games, so that At the end of the day, the Lorraine team missed two points due to the weak goal difference. For a long time, Le Havre and Troyes-Savinienne had also played at the top, before Le Havre in particular suffered a heavy bloodletting due to political circumstances. Because at the height of the Algerian war between France and its North African colony, numerous footballers decided in mid-April 1958 to leave their clubs in secret and to play for the Algerian "independence eleven" . With the Normans from le HAC , five players took this step, even if not all of them in April.

At the lower end of the table, half a dozen teams resisted having to take over the “red lantern”, including Sète, a team that was rated higher before the start of the season. The Dauphins had no win away from home and only got a draw with all five immediate "cellar neighbors". This season it hit Besançon, while the "subscription bottom" of the past few years, CA Paris, this time outperformed four opponents in the final division of Division 2 . There was also an inglorious event that brought about an innovation in France's stadiums . During the game between Nantes and Bordeaux in early October 1957, a spectator threw a stone at the referee and injured his head; the FFF then condemned the club to install protective grids between the trusses and the interior of the old Stade Malakoff ; these could only be removed 40 years later.

In the 462 encounters 1,388 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 3.0 goals per game. The top scorer's crown was won with 29 goals by the Swede Egon Jönsson from Nancy, who had already succeeded six years earlier . After the end of the season, no second division club gave up its professional status, and the French Football Association did not issue a new license to any amateur club. For the following season , only the two relegated from Division 1 , FC Metz and AS Béziers , were added, so that the second division should then play again with 20 teams.
