Division 2 1982/83
^ Division 1 1983/84

The Division 2 1983/84 was the 45th staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from July 23, 1983 to April 21, 1984; there was a winter break from early December to mid-January. The early end of the season was due to the European Championship finals held in France .

Second division champions were the FC Tours .

societies

The 28 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 37 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :

Only the first in the group were eligible for direct promotion. In addition, there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

While the newcomers could all only place themselves in the lower half of the respective group table - and half of them had to return to the third division immediately - two of the three first division relegated members kept the chance of immediate promotion, which ultimately only managed FC Tours . This was accompanied by two particularly scoring teams, both of whom had scored over 90 goals, Olympique Marseille and the traditional club Racing Paris, which was returning to Division 1 after two difficult decades , where the Algerian international Rabah Madjer had attracted attention with 20 goals this season. In Group A, the fight against relegation was particularly close this time: the ninth from Thonon-les-Bains only separated four points from the 16th, the first relegated.

1,680 hits were scored in the 648 encounters; this corresponds to an average of 2.6 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers were Mario Relmy from Limoges in Group A and Omar da Fonseca from Tours in Group B with 23 goals each, thus sharing the league's top scorer's crown. For the following season came with the AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Nîmes and Stade Rennes three relegated from Division 1 ; from the third highest league rose five teams, namely SM Caen , SC Amiens , CO Le Puy , AEPB La Roche-sur-Yon and FC Valence , so that the league again comprised 36 participants.

    Relegation

The runners-up in the group and, for the first time this season, the two third-placed teams fought to see which of them would beat the first division 18 AS Saint-Etienne was allowed to play for another promotion place in the top division. First, the two second met in a single game on the third of the other group; Nice prevailed against Le Havre (4: 3) and Racing Paris against Lyon (3: 1) only after extra time and then met - now again in the first and second leg. Nice (2-0) and Paris (5-1) each won their home game, so the goal difference was the decisive factor in favor of the capital eleven.

Racing then defeated Saint-Étienne (0-0 and 2-0) in the addition of two games and thus rose to Division 1 as the third second division.
