The Division 2 1961/62 was the 23rd staging of the second highest French football league . Second division champions were FC Grenoble .
societies
The 14 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division after the previous season and had given up their license - voluntarily or by force - were eligible to participate ; there were also four first division relegated members and a previous amateur club that had received the professional license.
Thus, the following 19 teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- four teams from the far north ( CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , OSC Lille , US Boulogne , relegated US Valenciennes-Anzin ),
- three from Paris and Champagne ( CA Paris , newcomer Red Star Olympique , relegated AS Troyes-Savinienne ),
- two from the northeast ( US Forbach , Racing Club Franc-Comtois Besançon ),
- four from the west ( AS Cherbourg , FC Nantes , relegated FC Limoges , Girondins Bordeaux ),
- six from the south (relegated FC Grenoble , AS Béziers , AS Aix , Olympique Marseille , SC Toulon , AS Cannes ).
There was only a direct promotion and relegation depending on the sporting result between the first and second professional division; After the Second World War , a descent into the third highest division had been introduced over a few years, but this was no longer in force. A second division officer could relegate alone in the event that he surrendered his license or it was withdrawn from him. Previous amateur teams, on the other hand, could only continue to move up to Division 2 for the following season if they received approval from the responsible association FFF to assume professional status.
This season, too, there was no relegation between the worst-placed first division team who was not directly relegated and the best second division team who was not directly eligible for promotion.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
With regard to the four promotion places, only Grenoble had the certainty of an immediate promotion at an early stage, while Valenciennes-Anzin - also after only one second division year -, Bordeaux and Marseille could only plan for Division 1 shortly before the end of the season , after they finally got away from the main pursuers Troyes, Nantes and Besançon had decisively deposed. Limoges was the only relegated last year who had not been able to intervene in this fight. At the bottom of the table were Cherbourg, Forbach, Paris and Roubaix-Tourcoing as well as between these with Béziers a team that had knocked on the gate to the footballing "upper house" in the previous season as fifth.
With an average of 2.76 goals per game (944 hits in 342 matches), the participating teams also set a new negative record in the history of Division 2. The top scorer's crown was won by Serge Masnaghetti of Valenciennes with 21 goals, and that was also the lowest figure since the second division. After the end of the season, no club gave up its professional status, and the French Football Association did not issue a new license to any amateur club. For the following season , four relegated from Division 1 were added - AS Saint-Étienne , which had won the national cup competition that summer , FC Sochaux , Le Havre AC and FC Metz - so that the second division continued at 19 Teams should play.
