The Ligue 2 2016/17 was the 78th staging of the second highest French football league . The season started on July 29, 2016 and ended on May 19, 2017. Racing Strasbourg became second division champions . The team managed to march through with the second promotion in a row from the third to Ligue 1 .

Relegated from Ligue 1 were Stade Reims , Gazélec Ajaccio and ES Troyes AC to from the third division rose Racing Strasbourg , US Orléans and Amiens SC on.

SC Amiens , who were in the third division last season, did the same feat as champions Racing Strasbourg. The “unicorns” only qualified for Ligue 1 in the sixth minute of stoppage time on the last day of the match with a 2-1 win at Stade Reims .
