Denis Athanase Bouanga (born November 11, 1994 in Le Mans ) is a Gabonese football player born in France who has been under contract with the first division club AS Saint-Étienne since July 2019 . The winger has been a Gabonese international since January 2017 .

Denis Bouanga was born in Le Mans to a French mother and a Gabonese father. He started playing football at CS Sablons Gazonfier and joined the youth team of Le Mans FC via SO Maine at the age of 17 . There he was sorted out in 2013, after which he joined the amateur club AS Mulsanne-Téloché. There he quickly became the team's best player and scored 30 goals in all of the club's competitions in the 2013/14 season. For the 2014/15 season he moved to the reserve team of FC Lorient , which played in the fourth-class Championnat National 2 . At FC Lorient II he also established himself as an important player and on October 28, 2014 he made his debut for the first team in the 2-1 away win against FC Évian Thonon Gaillard in the Coupe de la Ligue . He played his first game in the top French division on November 1, 2014 (12th matchday) in a 2-1 home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain , when he came on for Raphaël Guerreiro in the 82nd minute . It remained with these two competitive appearances for Bouanga this season, but he was able to convince in the reserve with 10 goals in 19 league games.

He was used in the first four first division games of the next 2015/16 season and scored his first goal for the Merlus on August 29, 2015 (4th matchday) in the 1: 4 away defeat against Stade Reims . He was then only considered in one cup game and left the club on January 4, 2016 on loan to third division racing team Strasbourg . There he met just four days later (17th matchday) in a 2-0 home win against ASM Belfort to start the six-month loan deal. He quickly established himself as an important core force in aspiring to promotion. On March 11 (24th matchday) he scored a brace in a 3-0 away win against rivals SR Colmar and prepared the third goal. Despite a short dry spell at the end of the season with only one win from the last eight league games, Racing achieved the championship title and thus promotion to Ligue 2 . Denis Bouanga played a major part in this with five goals and three assists and was in the starting line-up in all 18 league games that have been played since his arrival.

On July 26, 2016 Bouanga moved to second division FC Tours in a loan deal for the entire 2016/17 season . On July 29, 2016, he made his debut in the 0-0 draw against AC Ajaccio in the second-highest French division when he was brought into the game in the 66th minute for Bryan Bergougnoux . On August 19 (4th matchday) he scored his first goal of the season in a 4-1 away win against Chamois Niort . Bouanga emerged as a factor in the game of the Indre-et-Loire club . In the last 14 league games of the season, the winger scored 11 times and contributed significantly to the team's relegation. He played a total of 36 appearances in Ligue 2, in which he scored 16 goals and six assists, and then returned to FC Lorient.

Lorient had to relegate to Ligue 2 in the 2016/17 season and counted on the returned Bouanga. He was courted by several clubs in preparation for the 2017/18 season, but eventually extended his contract until 2021. He got off to an excellent start into the season and already had four goals and two assists after six match days. However, he was unable to maintain this quota in the next few months and ultimately dropped out of the starting line-up at the end of the season. He completed 34 league games, in which he scored nine goals and prepared four more goals and missed with Lorient the targeted return to Ligue 1 as table seventh.

On July 17, 2018, Denis Bouanga moved to Ligue 1 promoted Olympique Nîmes for a transfer fee of three million euros , where he signed a three-year contract. On August 11, 2018 (1st matchday), he played his first league game in a 4-3 away win against SCO Angers . He scored his first goal in the next game in a 3-1 home win against Olympique Marseille . He developed as a regular player in this 2018/19 season and played 35 league games in which he scored seven goals and three assists.

On July 9, 2019, Denis Bouanga joined league rivals AS Saint-Étienne for a transfer fee of 4.5 million euros , where he was given a four-year contract. On August 10, 2019 (1st matchday) he made his debut in a 2-1 away win against FCO Dijon . In the next league game against Stade Brest, Bouanga equalized the 1-1 final score in the 83rd minute. This 2019/20 season he played 26 league games, scoring 10 goals and three assists.

National team

Denis Bouanga was part of the Gabonese national team for the Africa Cup of 2017 in his own country. On January 14, 2017, he made his debut in a 1-1 draw in the first group game against Guinea-Bissau for the Panthères and prepared the goal for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang . He stood in the two other group games also over the full distance of the games on the field and was eliminated from the competition with the host as third in the group. On June 10, 2017, he scored his first international goal in a 2-1 away defeat against Mali in qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup .
