Stéphane Ruffier (born September 27, 1986 in Bayonne ) is a French football goalkeeper . His father Jean-François Ruffier is world champion in pelota , a return game of Basque origin.

Career

Stéphane Ruffier, who is of Basque descent, grew up and was born in the French Basque Country , started playing football at the age of 6 in the football section of Aviron Bayonnais . At first he played the position of a striker on the field but was asked at the age of 8 by a youth coach at the football academy due to a lack of goalkeepers if he would like to try the position of goalkeeper . The retraining proceeded quickly and at the age of 14 he had a trial training at HSC Montpellier , but could not convince there. In 2001, a scout from AS Monaco , Arnold Catalano, the discoverer of Thierry Henry , became aware of him, and so it happened that after a trial training session on August 2, 2002, he signed a youth contract with the Monegasque .

After only one season at the Monaco Academy, he was called up to the second team, where he made ten appearances in the Championnat de France Amateur . The following season he was number one in the amateur team, making 17 appearances. For the 2005/06 season Ruffier was loaned to his home club Aviron Bayonnais FC in order to receive missions in a professional league. Ruffier immediately prevailed and played all 38 league games for the club from Aquitaine , but could not prevent relegation for relegation and returned to Monaco at the end of the season. On May 10, 2006, Stéphane Ruffier signed his first professional contract with AS Monaco , which was valid for the three years until June 2010. He moved up to the second goalkeeper behind the Italian Flavio Roma , but was not used in the 2006/07 season. In the following season Roma injured in the third league game against FC Metz , whereupon Ruffier came on in the 58th minute and completed his first professional appearance in Ligue 1 .

He played the next three games against Sochaux , Le Mans and Lille for the full 90 minutes and made a total of 12 appearances for AS Monaco by the end of the season. For the 2008/09 season Ruffier was promoted by coach Ricardo Gomes to number 1 of the team. He was used in 36 games and was able to remain clean in eleven games. At the end of the season he extended his contract until June 2013. In 2010 he reached the final of the Coupe de France with Monaco , but failed there at Paris Saint-Germain with 0-1 after extra time. For the 2010/11 season he was appointed the team's new captain by coach Guy Lacombe ; the club rose after the season in the second-rate Ligue 2 .

In July 2011, AS Saint-Étienne Ruffier signed.

International

On August 19, 2008, he made his debut in a game against the Slovak U-21s , the game ended 2-2. He was also in two qualifying games for the U-21 European Championship 2009 in use, but missed the entry into the main tournament with the team, as they were eliminated against the eventual European champions Germany .

During the 2009/10 season Ruffier received a lot of praise from the media, but he was denied a call-up to the national team. Due to an injury to Cédric Carrasso , the third goalkeeper for the 2010 World Cup , he was re-ordered for the tournament on June 16, 2010 by team principal Raymond Domenech . However, FIFA refused to exchange the two players. Ruffier himself was already training with the team at this point and was sitting in the team bus during the boycott of the players due to Nicolas Anelka's dismissal . After the poor performance and misconduct of the French team at the World Cup, 23 players from the World Cup squad were banned from the French Football Association FFF for at least one game. Ruffier was not an official member of the management and so escaped this ban.

On August 5, 2010, Ruffier made his debut for the French national team under the new team boss Laurent Blanc . In the game against Norway he played through, but could not avert the 1: 2 defeat. He took part with the national team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil ; he was not used as a substitute goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris .
