Wesley Fofana (born December 17, 2000 in Marseille ) is a French football player of Malian descent who is under contract with the first division club AS Saint-Étienne .

Career

Born in Marseille in the south of France , Fofana played in the youth teams of various amateur clubs before moving to the youth department of AS Saint-Étienne in 2015 . Since March 2018 he has been playing for the reserve team in the fifth-class Championship National 3 . On May 15, 2018, he signed his first professional contract with Les Verts . In this 2017/18 season he made 10 league appearances for the reserve. In the following season 2018/19 he played predominantly for the B team and was promoted to the first team by head coach Jean-Louis Gasset at the end. The central defender made his Ligue 1 debut on May 18, 2019 (37th matchday) in a 3-0 home win against OGC Nice . He was also used again in the last game of the season.

At the beginning of the next 2019/20 season , he was not considered in any competitive game by the new head coach Ghislain Printant . This changed significantly after his dismissal and the arrival of the new trainer Claude Puel , who made him a regular player in central defense.
