The Indre-et-Loire [ ɛdʀelwaːʀ ] is the French department with the atomic number 37. It is in the center of the country in the Region Center-Val de Loire and was named after the two rivers Indre and Loire named. The department includes the historic Touraine region .
geography
The department of Indre-et-Loire borders in the north with the department Sarthe , in the northeast with the department Loir-et-Cher , in the southeast with the department Indre , in the southwest with the department Vienne and in the west with the department Maine-et-Loire .
The Loire flows through the department in an east-west direction. In the centrally located metropolis of Tours , the Cher flows into the Loire as a left tributary. As further left tributaries, the Indre reach the Loire further downstream and the Vienne on the border with the Maine-et-Loire department. The Creuse forms the southern part of the border with the Vienne department before it flows into the river of the same name.
history
The department was formed on March 4, 1790 from the main part of the Touraine province .
It has belonged to the Center region since 1960 , which was renamed Center-Val de Loire in 2016 .
