The Angers Sporting Club de l'Ouest is a French football club from Angers , the capital of the French department of Maine-et-Loire .

The club colors are black and white. The club's president has been Saïd Chabane since December 2011. The first team has been trained by Stéphane Moulin since 2011 (as of August 2015). With the promotion in 2007, the SCO Angers returned from third division to Ligue 2 , in 2015 the team even rose to Ligue 1 . The league team plays their home games at the Stade Raymond-Kopa , which has a capacity of 18,000 after the renovation of the Coubertin grandstand.

history

Old club crest

The club was founded on October 10, 1919, a Friday, by the Fortin brothers, bank directors of the Banque de Crédit de l'Ouest , as the Sporting Club du Crédit de l'Ouest (SCCO or SCO). The first game was played on October 19 of the same year in the Championnat de la Ligue de l'Ouest against Stade Nantais UC The line-up for the first game in the club's history consisted of the following players:

  • Legendre (goalkeeper) - Guyot, Viel-Lamarre (defender) - Bigarré, Perreault, Bruder (middle runner) - Hardy, Forget, Roger, Durbécé, Guimon (striker)

The first season was completed as sixth and last of the classification, while the local rival Club sportif Julien Bessonneau (CSJB) won the championship. The second season, in which one left the location of the home games, which was originally on the road to Nantes , and switched to another terrain, was then more successful. In addition to leading the league in the meantime, they also reached the round of 32 in the French Cup, where they failed due to US Servannaise . This cup success was repeated in the following season , but this time it failed 8-0 at the Stade Bessonneau against the first French cup winner from 1918, Olympique de Paris, still under the old name Olympique de Pantin . From 1922 to 1924, however, disappointing performances of the Angers team followed. One could not keep up with the rival CSJB in terms of performance and so finally in the spring of 1924 the temporary dissolution of the club's football department. In the following years the rugby department became the most important division of the club, and in 1929 the revival of the football department began.

In 1989 the association took on its current name.

League affiliation

Angers had professional status from 1946–1998 and again since 2000. In its history so far, the club completed 24 seasons in the top French division ( Division 1 , renamed Ligue 1 in 2002 ). This period extended to the seasons from 1956 to 1968, 1969 to 1975, 1976/77, 1978 to 1981, 1993/94 and again 2015/16.

National

The best placement in the national league system so far dates from the 1966/67 season, when they finished third in the French first division. In 1969 and 1976 the championship was celebrated in Division 2 . In the second highest French league Angers also won the runner-up championship in 1958, 1978 and 1993. In the meantime slipped into the third division, the club missed the championship title in the Championnat de France National there in 2003 , but secured the runner-up. In the years 1934 and 1967 you could also add the regional amateur championship titles of the Ligue de l'Ouest (now Ligue de Bretagne de Football ) to your own success statistics.

So far, the French cup competition has made it to the finals twice. In 1957, however, it was defeated by the Toulouse Football Club , which existed from 1937 to 1967, the predecessor club of today's Toulouse FC on May 26, 1957 with 3: 6. Exactly 60 years later , at the 100th staging of the competition, the SCOA qualified again for a final for the Coupe de France. In addition, the club was able to reach the semi-finals of the French Cup in 1962, 1966, 1969 and 2011.

International

In the 1972/73 season, the club took part for the first and so far only time in a European competition when they competed in the UEFA Cup . There Angers failed in the first round against the GDR representatives Dynamo Berlin after they were able to achieve a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg, but then lost 2-1 in Berlin in the second leg.

Club records

  • In the 1968/69 season, the Angers team marked a record 128 goals in 40 games in the second division.
  • Pierre Bourdel is with 477 games in the period from 1963 to 1975, in which he scored 12 goals, the club's record player by missions.
  • The most goals for SCO Angers were scored by Christophe Lagrange , who scored 125 goals between 1988 and 1994.
  • The highest victory in the club's history is the 11-0 home win against RCFC Besançon in the 1968/69 season, while the 9-0 defeat at FC Mulhouse in the 1984/85 season is the negative mark in this regard.

Club colors

In the founding phase of the club, the club colors were blue and white. In the course of the 1930s, black replaced the blue, as the president at the time found this color “best suited”. In the time that followed up to the present, the playing attire was repeatedly subject to modifications. Until the 1950s, white was the dominant of the two colors in the club's jersey. However, in the mid-1950s, the black color gained relative importance.

Rivalries with other clubs

The main rival of SCO Angers was FC Nantes since they fought for regional supremacy in Division 2 from 1945 onwards . After the paths of the two clubs initially no longer ran parallel due to different league affiliations, the sporting duel between the two clubs flared up again in the early 1960s and lasted until the 1980s, this time in the first division. With the descent of Angers, this era also ended. In the course of time this rivalry fell into oblivion due to the lack of common league affiliation. With the descent of the competitor called canaris ("canaries") (2007), this rivalry began to revive.

Other derbies, albeit subordinate in importance, are the games against Stade Laval , which are based on a rivalry that arose in the 1970s and emerged as a result of decades of joint league membership. So it came on the occasion of a friendly match between the two clubs on July 14, 2009 to disputes. During the game of both clubs on December 4th of the same year, the game was interrupted for several minutes as a result of smoke bombs set off by the Angevin fans. This resulted in a fine from the football association for SCO Angers.

In the recent past there has also been a certain amount of competition with neighboring Le Mans FC .
