Steve Savidan (born June 29, 1978 in Angers ) is a former French football player . The only 1.75 m tall, rather skinny striker , who had only played for lower-class clubs before August 2006, was considered the positive scorer surprise of the 2006/07 season in Ligue 1 .

Club career

At the club in his hometown, the SCO Angers , the son of a truck driver and a cleaning lady did not have a single assignment in Division 2 in his first professional season in 1998/99 . Until 2004, Savidan changed the club and the league seasonally, although he developed into a regular player at his second station ( LB Châteauroux , 1999/2000; 20 games in the second division); with three goals, however, he was anything but a goal getter. This was followed by one year each with second division AC Ajaccio (2000/01; 37 appearances, 6 goals), again with Angers SCO (2001/02, then now third class; 36 games / 6 goals), AS Beauvais (2002/03, Ligue 2 ; 24/0) and AS Angoulême (2003/04, third division; 37/12).

In the summer of 2004, decried already as "hikers" Savidan joined the also only in the third-class national gambling FC Valenciennes on. Perhaps his coach Daniel Leclercq (2004/05) and Antoine Kombouaré had the right “hand” - in any case, Savidan's performance rose steeply here; In the summer of 2005, the club from northern France, still called VA or VAFC in France, rose as champions in Ligue 2, and with his 19 goals in 37 appearances, the striker became the most successful striker in the third division. A year later, Valenciennes finished the season again in first place, and Steve Savidan again had a fair share of it, especially since his 16 goals (in 35 games) earned him the league scorer's crown in 2006.

In the 2006/07 season, the now 28-year-old surprised the defensive ranks of the French elite; Not only the goalkeeper legend Fabien Barthez , whom he overcame four times in the away game in Nantes , has known the name of this “nobody” since then, who scores his goals with right, left and head and is also a sure penalty taker. At the end of the season he finished second in the Ligue 1 scorer list with 13 goals behind Pauleta . In August 2006 he was voted “Player of the Month”.

Also in 2007/08 Savidan scored 13 goals, which again made him one of the most successful attackers (rank 8); in addition, he reached in a "midfield team" in the fight for the Étoile d'Or for the most consistent field player in the league also the 8th place. In Valenciennes he also ran a café , the K9 - named after the first letter of his girlfriend, with whom he has two children and who he has meanwhile married, and his own shirt number.

For the 2008/09 season, "Savigol" moved to league competitor SM Caen and immediately continued his performance from previous years. After a third of the season, he led the statistics of the most efficient offensive players ( combiné palette plus , an addition of hits, assists and key assistance). France Football described him as "of currently unmatched effectiveness and constant threat to the opposing defensive ranks". At the end of the season, he was the fourth top scorer in the league with 14 goals, although Caen was relegated. He then declared that he wanted to stay in the top division; on the occasion of his medical examination at AS Monaco , which Steve Savidan wanted to sign for the 2009/10 season, the finding of a heart anomaly resulted. The striker then announced his retirement from competitive sport. In August 2009 he was given the honor of carrying out the symbolic kick-off of the first division game between Monaco and Toulouse FC ; Savidan wore a Monegasque jersey with the nine on his back.

International assignments

After his commitment was increasingly vehemently demanded in the media - France Football dedicated a three-page cover story to him - national coach Raymond Domenech appointed the now 30-year-old for the first time to the Bleus squad for the friendship encounter against Uruguay on November 19, 2008, in which he then came to his first and only A international match. Savidan had only come to international honor once: in January 2000, he played a game for the Breton national team .

After the playing career

At the beginning of 2010 his autobiography Une balle en plein cœur appeared in German Ein Kugel (or a ball) in the heart . Since autumn 2011 he has worked as a knowledgeable commentator for Eurosport France on their broadcasts of matches of the French cup competition . In addition, Steve Savidan has completed the trainer training; Since January 2020 he has been assistant coach at third division club SO Cholet .
