societies
The 14 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division after the previous season and had given up their license - voluntarily or by force - were eligible to participate ; there were also four first division relegated members and a previous amateur club that had received the professional license.
Thus, the following 19 teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- three teams from the far north ( CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , OSC Lille , US Boulogne ),
- one from Paris ( Cercle Athlétique ),
- five from the northeast ( US Forbach , FC Metz , the two relegated Racing Strasbourg and FC Sochaux , Racing Club Franc-Comtois Besançon ),
- three from the west (the newcomer AS Cherbourg , FC Nantes , relegated Girondins Bordeaux , renamed at the beginning of the season ),
- seven from the south ( AS Béziers , relegated SC Toulon , SO Montpellier , Olympique Alès , AS Aix , Olympique Marseille , AS Cannes ).
There was only a direct promotion and relegation depending on the sporting result between the first and second professional division; After the Second World War , a descent into the third highest division had been introduced over a few years, but this was no longer in force. A second division officer could relegate alone in the event that he surrendered his license or it was withdrawn from him. Previous amateur teams, on the other hand, could only continue to move up to Division 2 for the following season if they received approval from the responsible association FFF to assume professional status.
This season, too, there was no relegation between the worst-placed first division team who was not directly relegated and the best second division team who was not directly eligible for promotion.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
The race for the four promotion places remained open until the last matchday, and the second division championship was only decided then - and only by the different goal quotients of Montpellier and Metz. Sochaux and Strasbourg finally succeeded against a chasing group consisting of six teams, in which Cannes turned out to be the most dangerous team of the season, the immediate promotion. In the lower part of the table, seven teams resisted having to hold the bottom position, including newcomer Cherbourg and relegated Toulon. Finally, as in the previous season, the team from Aix-en-Provence lost out in this dispute .
In the 342 encounters 1,028 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 3.0 goals per game. Casimir Koza (Strasbourg) won the top scorer's crown with 28 goals. After the end of the season, Olympique Alès gave up his professional status. For the following season , the first division relegated FC Grenoble , FC Limoges , US Valenciennes-Anzin and AS Troyes-Savinienne were added. In addition, Red Star Olympique received a professional license again after only one year in amateur gaming, so that 19 participants were still represented in Division 2 .
