Olympique Alès (or OA for short ) is a French football club from Alès , a town in the Gard department , on the southern edge of the Cevennes .

The club colors are blue and white; the league team plays in the Stade Pierre Pibarot , which today has space for 10,000 spectators. She currently (2013/14) only competes in the fifth class CFA2 .

history

The club was created in 1923 under the name Olympique Alaisien through the merger of three local clubs, namely Red Star , Boxing and Club Sportif des Cheminots . Just one year later, OA became the Languedoc regional champion . With the renaming of the city, the association was also called Olympique Alésien (or Alès Olympique , as can be read from time to time) from 1926 . He was one of the founding members of the French professional league , which began playing in 1932; In 1961, however, the professional area was liquidated. From 1970 the club went under the name Olympique Alès-en-Cévennes . Until 1997, Olympique played predominantly in the second or third highest league for around 60 years, only a few years one class higher. After the club was dissolved in 2003, it was founded again under its current name, but had to try a fresh start in the regional amateur league.

The greatest success in the club's history was the surprising foray into the semi-finals of the French cup competition (1986/87 season), which was played back and forth as a second division team . After Tours FC and Racing Strasbourg , among others , were eliminated, Alès met the Girondins de Bordeaux . In front of their own audience, Olympique defied the leaders of Division 1 with a 2: 2 and also fought a draw on the opponent's place (0: 0). Alès only missed the final because of the away goal rule - against an overpowering opponent who then won both the cup final and the championship title.

League affiliation and achievements

Olympique had professional status from 1932 to 1961 and 1993 to 1997. First class ( Division 1 , renamed Ligue 1 since 2002 ) Alès played in 1932/33, 1934 to 1936, 1947/48 and 1957 to 1959.
