The Division 2 1979/80 was the 41st staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from August 10, 1979 to May 21, 1980; there was a winter break from mid-December to mid-January.

AJ Auxerre became second division champions .

societies

The 28 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also two first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :

Only the first in the group were eligible for promotion. In addition, there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion.

Season course

Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.

With FC Tours and AJ Auxerre, two teams prevailed in their respective groups, both of which were promoted to the highest French league for the first time in their club's history. While Tours was able to keep its main Breton competitors from Rennes and Guingamp at a relatively clear distance, Auxerre's success was only finally certain after the 34th matchday. For Olympique Avignon, the outcome in Group B was particularly bitter, as his footballers finished a season as runner-up for the second time in a row - again tied with the first and then again as a failed eleven in the promotion relegation. While the two first division relegated teams of the previous season only reached a top midfield position in the final table this season, the six promoted teams once again made a name for themselves: Thonon, Nœux and Le Havre even played for promotion for a long time, and in the end none of the newcomers had to relegation, although in the case of Montmorillon only thanks to a waiver: AS Pierrots Vauban Strasbourg , although athletically qualified, refused to relegate, which means Montmorillon retained its place in the second division. Statistically, this season still remained the record of undecided outcomes, which Angoulême achieved in more than half of his point games (18 times).

In the 612 encounters 1,535 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.51 goals per game. The most successful goal scorers in Group A, together with 16 goals each, were Bernard Ferrigno from Tours and Alain Polaniok from Reims. In Group B, too, there were two players with the same number of hits: Robert Pintenat (Toulouse) and Jacques Vergnes (Montpellier); these two scored 19 goals each and thus won the league top scorer's crown. For the following season , Olympique Marseille and Stade Brest were relegated from Division 1 . Five teams rose directly from the third highest league: FC AS Grenoble , AS Libourne , AS Corbeil-Essonnes , SC Abbeville and SM Caen .

    Determination of the master

The two group winners met each other on a return game to determine this year's division 2 champion. Auxerre prevailed 4-0 in front of their own audience, so that the subsequent 0-1 defeat in Tours did not change anything in winning the championship title for the Burgundians .

    Relegation

According to the same mode, the two runners-up fought to see which of them against the first division 18. Olympique Lyon was allowed to play for another promotion place in the top division. Here Avignon prevailed 3-2 and 0-0 against Rennes. Avignon also won its home game against Lyon (4-2), but lost the first game 6-0 and remained in the second division.
