FC Thionville is a French football club from the Lorraine city of Thionville ( Diedenhofen ).
history
1905-1945
The club was founded in 1905 as the Diedenhofen football club when Thionville was still called Diedenhofen and, as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine, belonged to the German Empire . After the First World War, the club was renamed La Sportive Thionvilloise and was able to win the Lorraine championship for the first time in the 1922/23 season. This success could be repeated in 1924/25 and 1927/28. In 1924/25 and 1928/29 LST won the regional cup competition for the Challenge de Wendel .
During the Second World War, Thionville was conquered by the Germans in July 1940 and the city became part of the Reichsgau Westmark . In addition, the club was renamed TSG Diedenhofen and from then on played in the district class West Lorraine , the then second division. In order to promote Germanism, players from Saarbrücken, Metz and Kaiserslautern were transferred to the local clubs there. From April to June 1943, Fritz Walter, then 23, played for Diedenhofen in a few league games. But with the reconquest of the territories by the Allies in 1944/1945, league operations ended and the clubs were reintegrated into the French Football Association .
1945-1976
It was not until 1954 that Thionville FC returned to the highest regional amateur league, the Division d'Honneur . After six more years, he was promoted to the national amateur league, the Championnat de France Amateur (CFA). From 1962, large sports facilities were built in the city, including a stadium for 12,000 spectators. However, the FC held only two years in the CFA and spent the next few years again in the Division d'Honneur. It only succeeded in winning the Lorraine Cup competition three times, namely in 1963/64, 1973/74 and 1975/76.
1976-1981
From the mid-1970s, Thionville FC had its most successful period, rising in 1977 for the third and two years later even in Division 2 . There, however, the team only lasted two seasons. In the Coupe de France you could move into the round of 16 in 1980/81, but lost to FC Martigues in the replay with 0: 3, after the first game ended 2: 2 n. V.
1981 – today
Since the descent from professional football, the club can only be found in the amateur field. In 2008 you could win the regional Coupe de Lorraine and a year later the championship of the Division d'Honneur Lorrain . The club plays in the sixth class Regional 1B Lorraine for the 2019/20 season .
