The Division 2 1980/81 was the 42nd staging of the second highest French football league . It has been an open championship with professionals and amateurs since 1970. The game was played from August 9, 1980 to May 23, 1981; between December 14th and January 10th there was a four-week winter break.
Second division champions became Stade Brest .
societies
The 29 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also two first division relegated and five promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- Group A: EDS Montluçon , promoted AS Corbeil-Essonnes , SR Saint-Dié , Racing Club Franc-Comtois Besançon , US Tavaux-Damparis , FC Gueugnon , promoted FC AS Grenoble , CS Thonon , AS Angoulême , promoted AS Libourne , Toulouse FC , AS Béziers , Montpellier La Paillade SC , Olympique Avignon , FC Martigues , relegated Olympique Marseille , AS Cannes , Gazélec FC Ajaccio
- Group B: US Dunkerque , US Nœux-les-Mines , promoted SC Abbeville , promoted SM Caen , Paris FC , Stade Reims , FC Thionville , Le Havre AC , FC Rouen , US Orléans , AAJ Blois , UES Montmorillon , Stade Rennes , EA Guingamp , relegated Stade Brest , Stade Quimper , LB Châteauroux , FC Limoges
Only the first in the group were eligible for direct promotion. In addition, there was a relegation between the worst-placed first division team, who was not directly relegated , and the best second division team, who was not directly eligible for promotion.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
Brest returned to France's top division after just ten months, while Montpellier made its way there for the first time in 18 years . However, the second division again had to do without a third promoted team because the stronger group runner-up from Toulouse was unable to prevail in the relegation. Also in this season, the majority of the newly promoted from the third division managed to keep the class, only Caen and Corbeil returned there immediately. They had to accompany Avignon, a club that had mostly belonged to the top teams in Division 2 in the past decade , and Thionville, a club that after only two years and despite being placed in the middle of the table voluntarily wanted to play a class lower again. The latter decision ensured Dunkerque to remain in the second division for another year.
In the 612 encounters 1,452 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of only 2.37 goals per game. The most successful goalscorers in Group A were Robert Pintenat (Toulouse) with 32 and in Group B Marcel Campagnac from the newly promoted Abbeville with 22 goals; the league top scorer thus won Pintenat.
For the following season , the two relegated Olympique Nîmes and SCO Angers came from Division 1 ; six teams ( Calais RUFC , Stade Français 92 Paris , FC Fontainebleau-Bagneaux , FC Mulhouse , CS Cuiseaux-Louhans and SC Toulon ) rose from the third-highest league .

Determination of the master
The two group winners met each other on a return game to determine this year's division 2 champion. Brest won 3-2 in Montpellier and 2-0 in front of their own audience and thus rose as the second division champion.

Relegation
According to the same mode, the two runners-up fought to see which of them against the first division 18. FC Tours was allowed to play for another promotion place in the top division. Nœux-les-Mines (2-0) and Toulouse (5-0) each won their home game, so the goal difference was the decisive factor in favor of the southern French. They lost 1-0 in Tours and only drew 2-2 at home, so they also stayed in the second division.
