societies
The 27 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and six promoted from the national . These 36 participants played in two groups, divided mainly according to regional criteria (one with teams from the north and west and one with teams from the south and east). Thus, the following teams played for the division 2 championship this season : Promoted relegators
- Group A: US Dunkerque , SC Hazebrouck , US Grand Boulogne , SC Amiens , the renamed CS Sedan-Mouzon , FC Rouen , promoted SM Caen , Paris FC , promoted USM Malakoff , Entente Bagneaux-Fontainebleau-Nemours , Stade Laval , relegated Stade Rennes , Stade Brest , FC Lorient , promoted SO Cholet , FC Tours , LB Châteauroux , AS Angoulême
- Group B: EAC Chaumont , SAS Épinal , promoted SR Saint-Dié , FC Mulhouse , Racing Club Franc-Comtois Besançon , FC Gueugnon , AJ Auxerre , promoted JGA Nevers , EDS Montluçon , relegated Red Star FC , relegated SCO Angers , US Toulouse , AS Béziers , FC Sète , FC Martigues , SC Toulon , AS Cannes , newly promoted Gazélec FC Ajaccio
The respective group winners and the winner of the play-offs between the two runners- up were eligible for promotion . There was no relegation between the worst-placed first division clubs who were not directly relegated and the best second division clubs who were not directly eligible for promotion this time either.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The two-point rule applied ; In the event of a tie, the goal difference , then, if this was identical - as in this season between Martigues and Besançon - the higher number of hits scored and finally - as is the case with Béziers and Auxerre - the larger number of bonus points were decisive for the placement . Each team received an additional bonus point regardless of the outcome of the game for each game in which they had scored at least three goals, as well as for each victory with two or more goals difference; this should encourage attacking football. Since this regulation had not resulted in any significant success over three years, it was abandoned again for the following season .
In France, when specifying the point ratio, only the number of plus points is given; here this is done in the notation used in Germany at the time of the 2-point rule.
The three relegated teams from the first division occupied the top of the table in both groups, with Angers and Red Star's advantage over their pursuers in Group B only being clear due to the bonus points, while in Group A Rennes - like Laval - was also without this bonus clearly set themselves apart from the competition. Half of the six promoted from the third division had to return there immediately; best of them was Caen, who finished sixth in his Division 2 season. In the end, only their weak goal difference decided the relegation of Sedan and Mulhouse.
1660 hits were scored in the 612 encounters; this corresponds to an average of 2.71 goals per game. The most successful goalscorers in Group A were Boidar Antić (Caen) with 22 and in Group B Marc Berdoll (Angers) with 25 goals, who won the league's top scorer's crown. For the following season came with AS Monaco , Racing Strasbourg and Olympique Avignon three relegated from Division 1 ; Six teams rose directly from the third highest division, three of which ( Stade Quimper , FC Bourges , AC Arles ) already had experience at this league level, while the promotion for US Nœux-les-Mines , Amicale Lucé and US Tavaux-Damparis was a first meant.
