The Ligue 2 2002/03 was the 64th edition of the second highest French football league and at the same time the first season under the new name Ligue 2. It was a league exclusively with professional teams.
The game was played from August 2, 2002 to May 23, 2003. AC Ajaccio became second division champions .
societies
The 14 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) or lower after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also two first division relegated and four promoted from the national . Thus this season the following 20 teams played for the championship of Division 2 : Relegated promoted
- three from the north ( Entente Sportive Wasquehal , SC Amiens , AS Beauvais )
- two from Île-de-France and Champagne ( US Créteil , promoted Stade Reims )
- four from the northwest ( Stade Malherbe Caen , Stade Laval , Le Mans UC , relegated FC Lorient )
- three from the northeast (relegated FC Metz , AS Nancy , FC Gueugnon )
- three from the southwest ( La Berrichonne Châteauroux , Chamois Niort , newly promoted FC Toulouse )
- five from the southeast (promoted Clermont Foot Auvergne , AS Saint-Étienne , Grenoble Foot , promoted AS d'Origine Arménienne Valence , FC Istres-Ville Nouvelle )
The top three clubs were directly eligible for promotion. The three worst placed participants had to relegate and were replaced by as many third division promoters.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The three-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.
With the second promotion in a row, Toulouse managed to march through from the third to Ligue 1 , although it was close behind because four - and even three before the last day of the game - opponents were fighting for the two other promotions. In the end, Lorient, one of the two relegated teams from last year, was just left behind, while the Lorraine team from Metz immediately returned to the top division as third in the table. The relegation hit three teams from northern France with Beauvais, Wasquehal and - after only one season - the six-time former champions from Reims . In contrast, the other two promoted teams, Valence and Clermont, achieved a place in the secured midfield of the classification and thus managed to stay in the league.
In the 380 encounters 757 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 1.99 goals per game - the lowest value in the 64-year history of the second division; until then, the negative record from the 1990/91 season (an average of 2.1 hits per encounter) was in place. The most successful goalscorer and thus the winner of the league top scorer was Cédric Fauré of champion Toulouse with 20 goals. For the following season three relegated from Ligue 1 were added ( Le Havre AC , CS Sedan and ES Troyes AC ); three teams rose from the third highest division, namely SCO Angers , Racing Besançon and FC Rouen .
