The Division 2 1997/98 was the 59th staging of the second highest French football league . It was a league with only professional teams.
The game was played from August 2, 1997 to May 8, 1998. AS Nancy became second division champions .
societies
The 16 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) or lower after the previous season were eligible to participate ; in addition there were four first division relegated and two promoted from the national . Thus, the following 22 teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- four from the north (relegated OSC Lille , promoted ES Wasquehal , AS Beauvais , SC Amiens )
- two from the Paris area and the Champagne-Ardenne ( AS Red Star , Association Troyes AC )
- three from the northeast (relegated AS Nancy , FC Mulhouse , FC Sochaux )
- four from the northwest (relegated SM Caen , Stade Laval , Le Mans UC , FC Lorient )
- two from the center ( CS Louhans-Cuiseaux , FC Gueugnon )
- one from the southwest ( Chamois Niort )
- six from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , USJOA Valence , promoted Olympique Nîmes , FC Martigues , Sporting Toulon , relegated OGC Nice )
This time the top three clubs were directly eligible for promotion. In contrast, the four relegated teams were again replaced by only two third division promoters, because the second division should be reduced to 20 participants.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The three-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.
Last year's relegated Nancy and - for the first time in its club's history - FC Lorient were established relatively early as promoted; for third place in the table, however, there was a race between four teams that was only decided on matchday 42, in which the Peugeot "works club" from Sochaux narrowly prevailed against relegated Lille. Also at the end of the season the final decision was made about who would have to accompany Mulhouse, Martigues and Toulon into the third division. It finally hit the "Dorfkicker" from Louhans and Cuiseaux , so that among others the French record champions AS Saint-Étienne was spared this lot. However, the main focus of the public interested in football was not so much on the decisions in Division 2 as on the World Cup finals in their own country, which began immediately after the end of the season .
In the 462 encounters 1,083 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.34 goals per game. The most successful goalscorer and thus the winner of the league top scorer was Réginald Ray from Le Mans with 20 goals. It should be mentioned that the "Armenians" from Valence set a new league record with their 22 undecided games. The following season came with En Avant Guingamp , La Berrichonne Châteauroux and AS Cannes three relegated from Division 1 ; from the third highest league two teams rose, namely AC Ajaccio and CS Sedan .
