Division 1 1996/97

The Division 1 1997/98 was the 60th season of the highest French football league. The season began on August 2, 1997 and ended on May 9, 1998.

The league was reduced by two places to 18 clubs. As a climber came LB Châteauroux and Toulouse FC from Division 2 to do so. The season as champions ended the RC Lens and became the successor of AS Monaco . Lens and FC Metz qualified for the UEFA Champions League . AS Monaco, Olympique Marseille and Olympique Lyon as well as Girondins Bordeaux and Paris Saint-Germain qualified for the UEFA Cup through the two cup competitions. In the UEFA Intertoto Cup the following year played AJ Auxerre , SC Bastia and Le Havre . EA Guingamp , LB Châteauroux and AS Cannes had to relegate to Division 2 .
