Vladimír Šmicer (born May 24, 1973 in Děčín ) is a former Czech football player .

Club career

After initial success at home with winning the title in 1996, Šmicer moved to RC Lens in France after the European Football Championship in 1996 . In Ligue 1 he was also able to win the title in 1998, in addition to the league cup title in 1999. The Czech attacking midfielder celebrated his greatest successes when he moved to Liverpool in 1999 . In 2001 he won the UEFA Cup with the English and in 2005 , his final season for the English club, the UEFA Champions League in a dramatic final against AC Milan . In this final he was substituted in the middle of the first half and was able to score the all-important 2: 3 goal after a 3-0 half-time deficit in the second half. After the game ended 3: 3 after extra time, he scored the decisive goal in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.

On November 9, 2009, Šmicer ended his career due to ongoing injury problems and became manager of the Czech national team.

National team

With the Czech national team he was runner- up in the 1996 European Football Championship finals against Germany . He was also in the squad for the Czech Republic at the 2000 European Football Championship and the 2004 European Football Championship . Only the participation in a soccer world championship was denied to the playfully strong outside runner.

In November 2005, he ensured the qualification of the Czechs in the relegation match in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup when he scored the 1-0 winner in the first leg against Norway; He was also there in the second leg. He was nominated for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but then got injured.
