The Division 1 1951-52 was the 14th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the OGC Nice for the second time , which was able to defend its title won last year.
The first game day was August 26, 1951, the last game day was May 25, 1952. There was no “winter break”; Point games were also played on December 23rd and 30th.
societies
Eligible to participate were the clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 14th place, as well as two direct promoters from the second division . Then there were the two winners of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north ( CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , OSC Lille , relegation winner Racing Lens ),
- two from Paris and Champagne ( Racing Paris , Stade Reims ),
- two from the northwest ( Le Havre AC , Stade Rennes UC ),
- four from the northeast ( FC Nancy , Racing Strasbourg , FC Sochaux , newly promoted FC Metz ),
- one from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux ),
- six from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , promoted Olympique Lyon , relegation winner FC Sète , Olympique Nîmes , Olympique Marseille , defending champion OGC Nice ).
Season course
Before the start of the season, the defending champion from Nice had strengthened his staff with half a dozen new players in all parts of the team and even "doubled" the coaching bench: Sports director Mario Zatelli , who had acquired his training leader's certificate, assisted the "1951 master maker", Numa Andoire , who lacked the appropriate formal qualifications. The Aiglons - the OGC players were already known as “young eagles” back then - played at the top of the table from the start of the season; at the end of the series, however, Roubaix-Tourcoing came first. From then on, however, Nice dominated Division 1 , which won its points with great consistency. A week before the penultimate matchday, the OGC and its closest pursuer, Girondins Bordeaux, met in the cup final and delivered an intense, scoring and enthusiastic match that the Aiglons finally won. Apparently, both teams had suffered a significant loss of strength as a result, because in the league they then lost 6-0 each - Nice in Lille and Bordeaux in Marseille; As a result, Nice led with one point ahead of the Girondins and only two more than Lille before the 34th matchday. In addition, both opponents had a significantly better goal difference, and the OGC received Olympique Marseille at the end of the season, a draw in this game would have been enough to avoid the barrages against the third in Division 2 . Nice had recovered, however, retained the upper hand 2-0 and thus became the fourth club in league history to win the doublé .
Marseille was able to secure the league after the end of the season with 1: 3 and 4: 0 against the US Valenciennes-Anzin , so that in the following season only the capital club Stade Français and SO Montpellier replaced the teams from Lyon and Strasbourg, which were relegated early on.
