Division 1 1982/83

The Division 1 1983/84 was the 46th staging of the professional French football league. The Girondins Bordeaux became champions for the second time after 1950 .

The first match day was July 20, 1983, the last match day was May 2, 1984. This early end of the season served a long, undisturbed preparation for the European Championship finals in France and, a little later, the Olympic football tournament . Since there was also a four-week winter break from December 19 to January 13, several “ English weeks ” were necessary - the result of both events was an extremely worthwhile plan.

The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference and possibly - as between Bastia and Laval - the higher number of hits made the decisive factor for the placement.

Before the start of the season, numerous first division players had particularly intensive and costly activities on the transfer market. Bordeaux, which had already invested a lot of money in new signings in previous years, strengthened itself with three other French national players ( Battiston , Tusseau , Zénier ); Monaco's new coach Lucien Muller was able to incorporate four new ones ( Bravo , Genghini , Le Roux , Krause ) into his dream team. But the newcomers also spent considerable amounts to strengthen themselves with well-known or particularly talented players: Rennes brought in Stopyra and Hiard , while for Toulon, which had only returned to professional league operations in 1981, with the 35-year-old Onnis the up to in the present (2012) in France, the most successful league hunter of all time, should provide hits, for which Paganelli and Emon were put to his side. Not only Rennes had to experience that money doesn't score goals.

Bordeaux and Monaco fought head-to-head at the top of the table over the entire season, in which defending champions Nantes, Paris and - even well into the second half - the surprise team from Auxerre were able to intervene until the end of the year . The Girondins gained their first psychological advantage when they were able to steal the points from the home-strong "yellows" from Nantes at the end of February. Their 7-0 victory over Saint-Étienne had already made the public who are interested in football sit up and take notice, and then they won six games in a row, but were defeated 2-1 at the Monegasque . The decision was made on matchday 36: Bordeaux won clearly against their pursuers Auxerre, while the overall most successful away team from Monaco did not get beyond a draw in Toulouse, which resulted in both teams being tied on points. This remained so until the end of the season - both opponents got four points from the remaining matches - and the significantly better goal difference tipped the balance in favor of the Girondins. This ended a long dry spell for Bordeaux, 34 years after the last title win, in which it was only enough to runner-up five times; at the same time the most successful period in the club's history began.

At the bottom of the table, Nîmes and Rennes already knew in April that they had to return to Division 2 after just one season ; Olympique Marseille and FC Tours took their places in the following season . On the other hand, it was only on the last day of the match that Saint-Étienne would have to fight for relegation in the Barrages - and the French record champions were left behind, just three years after their tenth title win. One of the most traditional clubs in France benefited from the relegation of the “Greens”: Racing Club Paris , one of the founding members of the league in 1932 , beat Saint-Étienne 0-0 and 2-0, making it the second club in the capital to belong to the “football club” again House of Lords ”of the country.
