Division 1 1970/71

The Division 1 1971-72 was the 34th professional French football league. Olympique Marseille became champion for the fourth time since 1937 .

The first game day was August 11, 1971, the last game day was May 27, 1972. There was a “winter break” from December 20 to January 7.

societies

Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th, plus three promoted teams from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

Marseille managed to defend their title relatively easily because the opponents Saint-Étienne and Nantes, who had been declared co-favorites before the start of the season, did not meet expectations. Saint-Étienne won both games against Olympique and had the most dangerous attack in the league, but suffered six home defeats alone and at times made more talk through the attacks of its president Roger Rocher against his Marseille counterpart Marcel Leclerc , who called him “unfair poaching “Considered the move from goalkeeper Carnus and defender Bosquier to OM for a long time was not ready to accept. Nice was also unable to confirm its title ambitions with corresponding performances despite the arrival of four national players ( Baratelli , Loubet , Huck , Revelli ). Nîmes and Sochaux remained the actual main pursuers, but they always kept a distance from Marseille that allowed the old and new masters some “breather” - for example in April, when OM “rested” on a 10-point lead . For Nîmes, where the “indestructible” squad Firoud was back in the dugout and two former Romanian internationals ( Voinea , Pârcălab ) stormed, second place after twelve years meant a sense of achievement, but at the same time confirmed his role as “eternal second”.

At the end of the table, AS Angoulême could not avoid relegation because they were an almost reliable point supplier, especially in away games, who only had two draws on the credit side in 19 matches. She was accompanied by Lille and Monaco, two ex-champions who, however, had only returned to Division 1 this season . The third newcomer, Paris SG, had to leave the league again after this season - even in the direction of the third division - because he did not meet an association provision according to which professional clubs also had to maintain amateur and youth teams; in his place, Paris FC was added to the D1 for the following season . For this, the three relegated members of 1971 had also qualified in a sporting way with US Valenciennes-Anzin , CS Sedan and the Racing-Pierrots Strasbourg-Meinau .
