The Division 1 1957-58 was the 20th anniversary of professional French football league. Champion became Stade Reims , which won its fourth title since 1949 .
The first game day was August 20, 1957, the last game day was May 11, 1958. There was no “winter break”.
societies
Eligible to participate were the clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 15th, and the three teams that made it straight out of the second division or had prevailed in the relegation . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north (relegation winners OSC Lille , Racing Lens , US Valenciennes ),
- three from Île-de-France and Champagne ( Racing Paris as well as Stade Reims and UA Sedan-Torcy ),
- two from the northeast ( FC Sochaux , FC Metz ),
- one from the west ( SCO Angers ),
- nine from the south (defending champions AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , Toulouse FC , the newly promoted AS Béziers and Olympique Alès , Olympique Nîmes , Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice , AS Monaco ).
Season course
After a few teething problems, Reims was able to sit at the top of the table in December and did not give up this place until the end of the season. A week after the last league game, the red-whites also won the cup final against runner-up Nîmes, thus securing the doublé and representing Division 1 in the subsequent playout of the European Cup . The southern French pursuers Nîmes and Monaco, which were joined by the Angers team in the second half of the season, ended the season seven points behind. The fact that the Monegasque in particular with their "iron defense" and "the right wing from Reims Glovacki / Hidalgo " could not stand up to the master was also due to bloodletting, from which they were not alone, but particularly badly affected: In mid-April 1958, a number of Algerian professionals left their clubs in a night-and-fog action in order to join the FLN football team - their homeland, which was still under French rule , was at war with the "motherland" - and these were central pillars from Monaco's team (goalkeeper Boubekeur and two national players in defense chief Zitouni and Ben Tifour ). The defending champions from Saint-Étienne, who admittedly simply too often contented themselves with a draw throughout the season (a total of 17 times) and fell back into midfield, had lost a very important player with Mekhloufi through this political action .
In the lower regions of the table, the “big” Olympique Marseille was even threatened with relegation, because on matchday 31 the well-known team was in last place, but was able to beat Sedan with a small final spurt with a meager home 1-1 and save in the last second thanks to the slightly better goal quotient. Not much better did Nice, whose storm had scored 54 goals at home, but remained only a shadow of himself away. So Metz and newcomer Béziers had to go to Division 2 ; due to the increase in the first division to 20 clubs, they were replaced for the next season by FC Nancy , Stade Rennes UC , FC Limoges and Racing Strasbourg .
Because the league was increased at the end of the season, the table had to 16. do not have a barrage with the second division third.
