Raoul Giraudo

Raoul Giraudo (born May 19, 1932 in Aix-en-Provence , † October 26, 1995 ) was a French football player .

The club career

Raoul Giraudo, who was mainly used as a left defender during his career , had played at Stade de Reims since 1950 , but was only used in their amateur team for the first few years. Like his teammate Francis Méano from Reims , he came from the youth of AS Aix in Provence . In 1950 Giraudo belonged to the French A youth selection, which took second place in the European Junior Championships.

He played his first game in Division 1 at the end of November 1954 in a 3-0 win against Girondins Bordeaux ; but when the regular left-back Siatka was available again 14 days later, Giraudo moved back into the second ranks. After all, he became a permanent fixture for coach Albert Batteux , and in this way he made 13 appearances with the professionals in the 1954/55 season and at the end of the season he was also able to look forward to winning the national championship . And the following year it was Siatka who only played the "joker role" in the defensive formation. Giraudo, on the other hand, was used in most league games and was especially involved in all the games of the first ever European Cup - including the dramatic final on June 13, 1956 in the Prinzenpark in Paris , when the red-whites were 2-0 and 3: 2 lead in the end had to give Real Madrid 3: 4 defeat.

In the following season there was still the interplay between the two defender positions between Giraudo, Siatka, Zimny and the young Raoul Schollhammer; what was a stroke of luck for the coach, Giraudo should not have particularly liked with only 12 league appearances. But in 1957/58 he had a regular place again and was one of the first team to even make the doublé , winning the championship and cup in the same season. The left-back was also on the pitch in the cup final and is one of the very small number of players in France who were granted such a double title, because from 1933 to today (2012) only eleven clubs in France's top division achieved this .

The 1958/59 season went for Raoul Giraudo in many ways like the 1955/56 season: Stade Reims played in the league above without being able to defend the title, was also eliminated prematurely in the Coupe de France , but made it to the European Cup again until the final - where Giraudo had to make do with the silver medal again because Real Madrid were again superior to the Rémois (this time 2-0 in the Neckarstadion ). 1959/60 was Giraudos last year in Champagne : Bruno Rodzik and Jean Wendling had as a defender a bank and the two-time European Cup finalist was only in seven-point games on the lawn. He was able to celebrate his third national championship title, but again only as a reservist, as in 1955. He then spent one season each at FC Grenoble (26 point games, 3 goals) and - with only eight first division appearances - at FC Sochaux .
