The Division 1 1968/69 was the 31st staging of the professional French football league. Champion was again defending champion AS Saint-Étienne , who managed this for the fifth time since 1957 .
The first game day was September 1, 1968, the last game day was June 14, 1969. There was a three-week “winter break” between December 16 and January 4.
societies
Eligible were the clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 15th, plus a direct climber from the second division and the two winners of the relegation round between 16th and 17th of the first or second and third placed in the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- a club from the far north ( US Valenciennes-Anzin ),
- two from Paris and the Ardennes ( Red Star FC , Racing Paris-Sedan ),
- three from the northwest ( FC Rouen , Stade Rennes UC , FC Nantes ),
- three from the northeast ( FC Metz , FC Sochaux , relegation winner Racing Strasbourg ),
- one from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux ),
- six from the south-east (defending champions AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , relegation winner Olympique Nîmes , Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice , AS Monaco ),
- two from Corsica ( AC Ajaccio , promoted SEC Bastia ).
Season course
Defending champion Saint-Étienne had lost his long-time playmaker Mekhloufi , but other trump cards stood out on the offensive ( Revelli , Keïta ), and the defense of the "Greens" was almost invincible: in the entire first half of the season they only conceded nine goals and the eleven only suffered one defeat (in the neighborhood derby against Lyon, even in front of their own audience). Nevertheless, Bordeaux kept pace until mid-December, and only his 3-2 defeat in Saint-Étienne gave the ASSE two points ahead and then the autumn championship. By mid-April, the Greens expanded their lead to up to seven points, which had contributed to the fact that Bordeaux had prevailed in the Cup round of 16 against the ASSE, but also “had to continue to dance at two weddings, while Saint-Étienne had to Mastery could concentrate ”. Nevertheless, Bordeaux - the team with the most dangerous attack - came back in recent weeks, but never closer than two points.
The only team that could keep up with these two dominant opponents for a long time was Rouen, which remained unbeaten from October through January, but then ran out of breath. At the end of the table there were finally two neighboring teams, Monaco and Nice, who both had to go into the second division - Rethacker describes this as "size and decline on the Côte d'Azur " - because the Monegasque in the barrages against the second of the Division 2 ( AS Angoulême ) lost after three games. In addition to Angoulême, second division champions SCO Angers rose to the following season .
The season was also characterized by ongoing disputes between the football association and the players' union , with the latter prevailing on the question that professional contracts will only last for four years (contrat à temps) and no longer quasi "for life" - that is, until the 35th birthday - could be completed. In addition, the player's jerseys were allowed to contain advertising imprints for the first time in the 1968/69 season.
