Vladimir Durković (born November 6, 1938 in Đakovica , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † June 22, 1972 in Sion , Switzerland ) was a Yugoslav football player who won eight championship titles and five cup successes as an active member of FK Red Star Belgrade and AS Saint-Étienne .
career
Clubs, 1955 to 1972
Durković came from Kosovo and began his career with Napredak Kruševac. In 1955 he came to Roter Stern Belgrade , where he played until he moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1966 . He won the championship with the Red-Whites of Red Star Belgrade in 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960 and 1964 and also triumphed in the cup in 1958, 1959 and 1964. In addition to the coaches Milovan Cirić and Milorad Pavić, the classmates Vladimir Beara , Borivoje Kostić , Branko Stanković , Dragoslav Šekularac and Branko Zebec helped the mostly right full-back . In the European Cup, he was twice - 1958-60 with the Belgrade city selection and 1961/62 with the Red Star - in the semifinals of the Fair Cup.
In the second Bundesliga year of the "foal elf", 1966/67, the defensive player came to Borussia Mönchengladbach at Bökelberg. Coach Hennes Weisweiler relied on the internationally experienced man from Belgrade in the first three round games against Schalke 04, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Hamburger SV, but then withdrew his trust and the Yugoslav international only came back to the team in the last seven round games from the Lower Rhine. He said goodbye to Mönchengladbach and the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win at MSV Duisburg on matchday 34. After ten Bundesliga appearances, Durković moved to AS Saint-Étienne in the summer of 1967 .
With the "Greens" from Stade Geoffroy-Guichard he was able to under coach Albert Batteux and his teammates Georges Carnus , Bernard Bosquier , Aimé Jacquet , Robert Herbin , Hervé Revelli , Rachid Mekhloufi , Georges Bereta , Jean-Michel Larqué , Patrick Parizon and Salif Keïta to build on the successes with the Red Star. He was a member of the championship teams of 1968, 1969 and 1970 and also won the Coupe de France in the 1967/68 and 1969/70 seasons . In the European Cup he was eliminated with AS Saint-Étienne against Benfica Lisbon, Celtic Glasgow and Cagliari Calcio in the first rounds. Only in 1969/70 were they surprisingly eliminated from Bayern Munich, but then failed because of Legia Warsaw.
In 1971 he moved to FC Sion in Switzerland, where he was shot dead by a police officer in 1972 under questionable circumstances. In total, Vladimir Durković played 328 games in the first leagues of Yugoslavia, Germany, France and Switzerland from 1955/56 to 1971/72, scoring seven goals.
National team
He also played from 1959 to 1966 in the Yugoslav national team , which took part in the 1960 European Football Championship and the 1962 Football World Cup . He made his debut in "Plavi" on October 11, 1959 in Belgrade in the 2-4 defeat against Hungary at the side of his club mates Beara and Zebec. 1960 brought two high points: the European Championship , where Durković and his comrades were able to prevail against Portugal and in the semifinals against France and thus met the Soviet Union in the final on July 10th in Paris. The final was lost with 1: 2 goals. On September 10th he won the final at the Olympic Games in Rome with Yugoslavia with 3-1 goals against Denmark. In both finals he formed the defenders pair with Fahrudin Jusufi from FK Partizan Belgrade .
Also at the 1962 World Cup in Chile, the Balkan team was one of the best teams in the tournament and reached fourth place. Durković played all six games against the Soviet Union, Uruguay, Colombia, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Chile. With the international match on June 1, 1966 in Belgrade against Bulgaria, he said goodbye after 50 missions from the national team.
