This article covers the Yugoslav national team at the 1960 European Football Championship .

qualification

There were no qualifying groups for this first edition of the European Championship, but the four participants in the final tournament were played in a preliminary round - in which Czechoslovakia prevailed against Ireland - as well as the subsequent round of 16 and quarter-finals in the knockout system (each with home and away legs) determined. These preliminary rounds began after the 1958 World Cup and dragged on until June 1960.

In the round of 16, Yugoslavia eliminated Bulgaria . In the first leg, the Yugoslavs won 2-0 and played the second leg away in Bulgaria 1-1. In the quarter-finals, the opponent was Portugal . In the first leg in Lisbon they lost just 1: 2, but the Yugoslavs won the home game with 5: 1. So Yugoslavia was qualified for the finals in France .

The Yugoslavs lost the final just in extra time after a goal from Ponedelnik, despite a 1-0 lead. Nevertheless, the Yugoslavs can call themselves vice European champions after this game. Their players Milan Galic and Drazan Jerkovic were together with three other players top scorer with two goals.
