European Football Championship 1960 / France
This article covers the French national team at the 1960 European Football Championship .
qualification
There were no qualifying groups for this first edition of the European Championship, but the four participants in the final tournament were played in a preliminary round - in which Czechoslovakia prevailed against Ireland - as well as the subsequent round of 16 and quarter-finals in the knockout system (each with a return and return games). These preliminary rounds began after the 1958 World Cup and dragged on until June 1960.
In the round of 16, France eliminated Greece , making it 7-1 in the first leg in Paris (October 1958) - the Bleus scorers were Vincent , Fontaine , Cisowski (2 each) and Kopa - so that in Athens (December 1958 ) a 1: 1 (hit by Bruey ) was enough.
In the quarterfinals, the opponent was Austria . Again, France initially had home rights and won in December 1959 with 5: 2 (3 goals by Fontaine, 2 by Vincent). In March 1960 in Vienna, the Equipe tricolore retained the upper hand 4-2, with Marcel , Rahis , Heutte and Kopa successfully representing the missing scorers in the first leg. Thus, the host country of the final round was also involved in the sport.
