In Group 1, ex-world champions Uruguay were at least classified as one of the favorites, but things turned out differently. Although the Urus won against the underdog Colombia 2-1 in their first game, the South Americans lost the game against Yugoslavia (1: 3) and against the USSR (1: 2). The Yugoslavs failed in their first game against the Soviet Union 0: 2, but against Uruguay and Colombia (5: 0) the filigree technicians from the Balkans, who later played well-known Bundesliga players with Šoškić, Jusufi, Skoblar and Šekularac, were convincing Wins and qualified as second in the group for the quarter-finals. The group winners were the USSR, which only allowed themselves a little slip up against bottom-bottom Colombia (4: 4).

Meanwhile, the team around captain Hans Schäfer, the last remaining player from the 1954 world championship eleven, faced Yugoslavia, which had already been Germany's quarter-final opponent at the two previous World Cups and was defeated 2-0 in each case. As in the preliminary round games, national coach Sepp Herberger had given a defensive direction from which the counterattack should be driven via Uwe Seeler. But apart from in the second minute of the game, in which 'Uns Uwe' hit the post, the German team had no significant chance of scoring. The Yugoslavs dominated the game thanks to their outstanding technique, but only got the deserved winner three minutes before the final whistle or the impending extra time by Radakovic, who scored a left flank from Galic, who in turn had loaded Willi Schulz. Herberger's team, which was undergoing a change in personnel, was eliminated to the great disappointment of the fans. In retrospect, Herberger's destructive game system was criticized and considered the cause of the defeat.
